I like to think they're just ghosts that act like classic aliums.
Because it's neat, spooky, memorable, and would make people talk about for years to come like we are now.
it's just a fun diversion. Shit, there's so much stuff in majora's mask that doesn't make sense. If you really can't stand the notion that there would be aliens in a zelda game you could just imagine that they're some kind of ghost. There's even a cow in ikana canyon, maybe they put it there.
I kind of like the idea that they're representative of gorman brothers trying to sneak in the ranch and hustle the cows by cover of night, but they're seen as these creepy monsters because kids imaginations and yadda yadda. It doesn't really hold up under scrutiny but it's a fun notion.
