This is a thread for people who enjoy crawling through dungeons moreso than they enjoy talking to NPCs or sidequests or things like that.

Any game that potentially has a focus on crawling through elaborate dungeons is welcome.
>Early RPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest
>Dark Souls
>Legend of Zelda
>Rouge likes
>D&D games like Eye of the Beholder
>Wizardry and Etrian Odyessy type games

Anything along those lines, old or new, series or one-shot, is welcome here.

Any love for Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup?

Pic Related: My only 15 rune ascension.
>>
>>320894987
Dungeon Crawl SS is welcome in here as well. Though I tend to suck at it. I usually get pretty unlucky about 7 times with a character and run into sigmound, but then my interest has usually petered off around this time so I can never get particularly far.
>>
I'm kinda in the mood for a new but retroey dungeon crawler that also isn't ascii or animation-less sprites (ToME, though a very good game), any suggestions? First Person maybe like Delver but less Doom-ey.
>>
>>320895884
Grimrock? That sounds like you're up for some Grimrock. It has some problems, but overall manages to capture the EotB feel VERY well.
>>
>>320896083
I actually bought both Grimrocks when they were on sale in a super cheap pack recently, but the combat system is fairly wonky for me, not bad but I've had my fill of it for now
>>
>>320896280
Do you want first person, or turn-based?
>>
>>320896405
I meant do you want *real-time or turn based?
>>
>>320896405
First person or at least something that is animated sprites if 2d topdown
>>
>>320896498
Realtime then

Check out 9th Dawn for android, its fucking massive openworld and shitloads of dungeons. Takes some getting used to as GUI is clunky as shit but really immersive and fun once u get into it. Tonnes of loot to find
>>
>>320896505
Have you ever tried Pool of Radiance? It's really old, and I'm not sure if the spirtes are animated, but it is first-person until you enter combat, in which case it turns top-down. It's actually well written, and the mechanics are quite good.

Another choice is Eye of the Beholder itself. What Grimrock was based on, with more of a focus on mechanics from D&D than the homebrew workings.

>>320896796

Would suggest Eye of the Beholder then. Another good choice would be Might and Magic past 3

Game is Exanima, this is from story mode
>>
>>320897101
is this a tech demo?
>>
>>320894987

What's the appeal of this game anyway?
>>
>>320896872
Something preferably not that old, no. I know I'm asking a bit and being picky but it's still good to see various options.

Something more realtime exploratory, not grid based maybe? first person optional
>>
>>320894987

Stone Soup is still fun, but why do the devs feel like gutting the game more and more with each update? Or I guess, a more accurate term is down-date.
>>
>>320896083
Man I wanted to love Grimrock so much. But I really hated how the combat was real time.

>>320897172
Nope. Arena mode will be updated tomorrow, I got beta access if you want some webms.
You bet on your matches, amass winnings and rank up. You can hire recruits to fight with you or take your place in fights. If you ever die in a match, all progress is lost and you start from scratch.
You can now lose consciousness which just forfeits the match.
>>
>>320897489
Some kind of strange obsession with the devs and 'streamlining' and misinterpreting the whole point of why Stone Soup was created in the first place.
>>
>>320896872

I am so fucking happy GOG got the Gold Box games on their site.

Does anyone else here play pixel dungeon or any of its mods? I just beat unleashed on my first run with a warrior and I've also played sprouted and shattered

For those of you that haven't played it it's a mobile roguelike that's also ported to pc
Its honestly the first roguelike I ever played and really got me into the masochistic genre
>>
>>320899104
Pixel Dungeon was my first Phone game (I'm really fucking late to that party) and apparently a great choice. Challenging, but doable, simple, but deep. I bought it on Steam just to throw some dosh the Devs' way for making a good game on a mobile platform instead of the usual shit, and for making it open source on top of that, nigga earned it easily. Skillful Pixel Dungeon was interesting too, with skills for each class.
>>
>>320899104
I was into it until I learned that hunger is based off of the armor you're equipped with, and that the high tier strategy is to remove armor until you find an encounter, then put it on.

Felt like it took out some of the spirit of adventure for me.
>>
>>320899470
im pretty sure armor only effects your hunger if you dont have enough strength
>>
What should I emulate on my phone? Snes/gba/ps1 pls
>>
>>320899362
i've actually been playing since the beta before there actually was an ending

i remember once you hit either the dwarven city or the caves it pretty was just a small 3x3 room with a sign that said "new levels will be added soon"

it's crazy to see how much new content has been added over the years

how good is stone soup compared to nethack? i've tried multiple times to get into nethack but i'd always end up either poisoning myself or pissing off my deity after the first few floors

maybe i just need to git goud but nethack is just way hard for me

So something realtime, firstperson, and recent that isnt Grimrock. . .

I don't think that exists, anon. At least, not to my knowledge. The First-Person dungeon crawl kind of died for a REALLY long time until Grimrock revived it.

Oh, there's always a third-person game I could recommend. If you have a PSP or Vita, you can pick up Brandish - Dark Revenant.

Third-person
Single character (no party)
Real time
Platforming and Puzzles galore, HEAVY emphasis on exploration
Retarded good
A+

There's also a SNES version, but wouldn't recommend that as strongly as it's very. . .dated.
>>
>>320900492
There's also a PSN sale for it going on at the moment.

The appeal of Stone Soup, or any Roguelike, is essentially finding a perfect dungeon crawling algorithm. "What is the most efficient way to go into a dungeon?" Finding a series of steps you can take to maximize your lifespan in a foreign, unknown territory.

Example that EVERY rougelike player should know: What do you do if you encounter 2 or more enemies in a room?

You back up into a corridor to force them to fight you 1-on-1, minimizing the amount of damage they do to you in a round. Just knowing this bit of the algorithm for dungeon crawling will increase your survivability by 30%.

If you want an introduction into the Roguelike, I wouldn't recommend Stone Soup. Instead, try picking up either Shiren the Wanderer, or Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja. They're sort of introductory Roguelike games.

Another one in the same exact vain would be Pokémon, Mystery Dungeon.

DT2 was really a PSP game. It's good as fuck. I'm waiting for 2-2
Death Under the Labyrinth just came out, not sure how good it is

Also daily reminder that EOV will never EVER exist, thanks Atlus

Playing Dark spire and it's a huge love letter to old dungeon crawlers
>>
>>320897489
Appealing to a wider audience, IE the people that don't like Rogue-likes and think that BoI and FTL are Rogue-likes.
>>
>>320900492
I've been playing this but there's definitely a weird key glitch, where if you have a key for say floor 3, and then you walk to the shop on floor 1 to sell some junk, your keys disappear.

I definitely didn't sell them, because I already had to restart my save because of this, but it's really weird, since I've had it happen twice now.

At least now I have multiple saves going for safety, still love the game so far though.

It's much more fair towards the player, there's pretty much no bullshit deaths and you don't need to read the wikis to clear the game. It also plays very smoothly.
