I knew 2 people who had Mega Drives, whereas everyone else had a Super Nintendo, including myself. Now NES and SMS on the other hand, that was an even console war. I don't think there was a more even race until 360 vs PS3, which were both of course dominated by the Wii.

It was pretty even. Snes wasn't true 16 bit since it was backwards compatible with the 6500. Genesis was the 6800 so faster but Snes had all the cartridges do all the work so it wasn't drastic difference. The main difference was sony's da chip which allowed for digital recording like star ocean unlike segas fm chip. It also had reverb and a few other effects that were impressive

GEN was old garbage by the time the SNES came out and trumped it in ever major technical category other than a bit of CPU speed that Sega fags cling to as their one form of relevance. Software wise, the SNES fucking wiped the floor with its overall bigger and better library as well as higher quality games on the high end. So mostly superior hardware? Check. Vastly superior library in quality and quantity? Check.
GEN never had a leg to stand on and was its only worthy note is how long it stayed in the game despite being an outdated piece of 80's tech that took it on the chin more than Mayli.
But before you start getting all salty, this isn't to say the GEN doesn't have some good games. It's got some good shit on it and it's far from a shit console, but in retrospect putting up to the SNES is just unfair.
