Saw this on /v/ once and am thinking of trying it for my first gaming PC. I want something powerful that I won't need to upgrade for awhile. Ideally I want it to play pretty much anything I'm interested in maxed out.

What do you guys think of this build? Are there things you think should be changed? While I am willing to spend top dollar if needed, I also don't want to pointlessly spend money. I hear with PC building sometimes there are diminishing returns, where the highest price stuff yields hardly better results.

That's a joke build. You can build a PC stronger than a PS4 for under $400.
>>
1080p? 980ti should be able to max out games in 1080p for a year or two.

Personally I think game developers are just optimizing games less and less. It's not like they're jumping in graphics anymore.

That motherboard seems excessively expensive, what makes it worth all that money?

I don't think you can max modern games with a single 980ti to pull that off.

What do you recommend then?

Also does anyone know any good online guides to teach me the ins and outs of PCs? I know youtube is good for tutorials on literally building a PC, but I would like a guide to teach me about PCs and make it so that I can make informed decisions on which parts are best and such.
>>
>>320862445
I just finished building my PC today, and the only parts I have in common with you are the PSU, the case and the GPU.

I am envious of your screen, I just got a 1080@144Hz one

Your dad. My first PC build was with my father and it went rather nicely. Just be like "yo dad what the fuck is RAM."

Logical Increments has some good information. Check 'em out if you haven't already.

I'll look into them. Thanks anon. I really want my first PC to be done right.

Helps you see where you are bottlenecking.

All in all, you would be bottlenecking on your GPU there, but it's not your fault. That's the top of the line.
SLI does not give a linear increase and support for it is fucking terrible in games.

Your CPU is set to take on the world, and your CPU cooler is really good, so I think you can use this CPU for half a decade and not even bottleneck.

The 2400MHz on your RAM looks nice on paper, but its a fucking 14 CAS. Your timing is way too high and would cripple its performance.
Also this is personal preference, but I prefer to avoid 4 sticks.
2 sticks gives same performance and better airflow as well as more room to expand later, or simply gives you more comfort in picking your CPU cooler.

Good HDD and good SSD, no comments there.

Your case is GOAT for its price, treasure it well.
What's the case fan for? Are you setting them for input or for exhaust?

Good Mobo for overclocking, but that's the question: FUCKING WHY? You honestly won't need to overclock your CPU, and your RAM are operating on a high enough clock as is, the real bottleneck on them is the 14 CAS latency.
And it's not like you'd get much from overclocking an already overclocked GPU.

Great screen.

It's a bit overblown in parts, but it's your money.

Check out this build anon.

I swapped out the 500 GB SSD for a 120 GB SSD that should function as an amazing boot drive.

I also swapped out your motherboard to a cheaper motherboard that still has everything that you need and will function just the same as your previous motherboard

Finally as many people have already pointed out 1440p 144hz gaming cannot be done with a single Ti so I swapped it out with a 1080p 144hz monitor that I infact use. But if you do want to keep your monitor and strive for max settings @ 144hz then I'd suggest getting a second 980 Ti and SLI both of those suckers together.

I kept the i7 on there but just want to say that the increase in processing is really not strong dollar/power as compared to an i5 at least for gaming but if you have the money then go for it.

Other than that it looks like an extremely solid build

Not OP but the case fans would most likely have to be output due to the design of the case causing air to either be pushed out or pulled in through slits in the top of the case or an opening in the back just over the mobo exhaust which would lead to some dust problems as the case comes stock with I believe a 140 mm in the back and a 200 mm in the front.
>>
>>320865494
Like I said I saw this build on /v/ once and saved the page. I have made no alternations to it nor do I know the reasoning behind whoever made it to begin with.
>>
>>320866459
I have an Enthoo Pro.
Teach me your ways o wise Wind Sage.
I just have the stock 200mm and 140mm you spoke of. Front is input and back is exhaust.

I don't see the need for more fans but I'd be delighted if you'd teach me.

The bottom is completely blocked by the shroud, and it's more dusty so I was thinking of adding three or two fans to the top, but I was thinking on making them exhaust because "hot air goes up"
At the same time, wasn't it an advice I read here that you should focus on equal input vs exhaust, with input slightly winning out?

Wouldn't that tip the balance?

It's been so fucking long.
>>
>>320867296
Basically you just need more air coming in through the input than you do the exhaust. I have the EVOLV which is its mATX counterpart so I took out its original 200mm fan in favor of 2 140mm fans that are really powerful. I have a liquid cooler for my cpu so I took out the stock 140mm fan in favor for that and got 2 more ball bearing 140mm fans for the top.

Basically just have more air coming in than going out but just by a small margin. If you have too much air coming in then it will make your output fans less useful up until the point where you have so much air coming in and not enough going out that the hot air stays within the case longer. But, if you do it just right you actually will have less dust buildup as the extra amount of air will try to push itself out of any little crack or opening within the case that dust would otherwise sneak itself into.

Don't mind me also, just keeping this thread ON-TOPIC with video games you'll never get.
>>
>>320870092
So won't those two 140mm top fans in exhaust just mess up the balance?
That way there are three exhaust fans:
140mm top
140mm top
140mm back

Vs one fan input:
200mm front.

How would I go on adding those extra fans then?

>>
>>320870310
As cheesy as it sounds, it's not about size, it's about power.

You can have a small 100mm fan spinning at 2000rpm which will push more air than a 400mm fan spinning at 30rpm. You just have to look at the amount of air being pushed through and just deduce how powerful each fan should be

Noope.
>>
>>320862445
You could always by a prebuilt rig from iBuyPower or something.
I bought one with these starting specs and in terms of performance, it was pretty good, the only thing you would need is more ports for a sound system and possibly a wifi adapter if that is your style.
> GPU: GTX 750
> CPU: AMD 8320 8 core (3.5 ghz per core)
> RAM: 8 GB
> 400W PSU
It is cheaper and easier to just buy prebuilt and go from there.

>>
>>320875710
OP here. I just want to do it right the first time so I can have fun playing video games. I want a powerhouse of a computer, but know nothing about computers. Everyone says not to buy prebuilts so I won't.

So far I've gotten conflicting results on if I should change anything. Based on what I've read, if I keep the current monitor then I will need to buy a second graphics card to be able to max out games on said monitor. Is this correct?

So that's an additional six hundred dollars for the secondary one. Is this actually worth going for? I guess what I'm trying to say is that do graphics cards actually work like a math equation (1 + 1 = 2) or will having two of this model be completely outclassed by whatever graphics card comes out next year? I don't want to buy two just to be unable to play games that come out late 2016 at ultra settings.

my two cents:
if you are really willing to spend 3k on a new rig then wait till the next gen of GPUs come out. from the released specs they are going to be trim, slim, and much better when it comes to heat dissipation.

as others in this thread have stated, you will need two 980ti cards to run 144hz 4k- the next gen of cards are looking to be geared much more towards 4k gaming so that's another reason to wait for them.

I personally view your rig as overpriced- an i7 6 series are great and all on paper and allowing the use of ddr4 ram is fab but for gaming purposes, even in 4k, you will not see a significant boost because of them.

fucking rad choice in Heatsync though- Noctuas are beasts for Overclocking.

also no, cards do not work in a 1+1=2 format, usually a 1+1=1.6-8 type deal with similar diminishing returns the more they are xfired or sli.
