What are some comfy space exploration/combat games?

Distant Worlds Universe with mods is the best 4x game at the moment. Before Stellaris comes out.
But for 1st person realtime games, Elite Dangerous is the 'best' I guess. It's okay but gets boring after a while. It's bit like Space Truck simulator.
Freelancer was nice
Space Engine, although it's not much of a game
Elite: Dangerous has little else going for it but comfy and space trucking
EVE, apparently, although it takes like a month of work before you can pay for your own subscription with ingame money
Star Citizen is getting there, slowly but surely
Endless Sky. Seriously, check it out. It's free on Steam.

I've tried the EVE, but it wasn't for me I guess, I don't like farming for a month so I can actualy enjoy the game itself.
I am looking forward to play the Star Citizen, but it's still a long way to go.

Even though its just an exploration game that only serves your curiosity Space Engine is free and totally worth the look to just be amazed at the cosmic beauty in the game.

What are the best mods for X3 AP? I played 30 hours of vanilla 3 years ago and now I want to try some mods but there are so many I don't know where to start.
