The controls take some getting used to and the difficulty is insane if you're using a photon early on, but it's one of my favorites alongside phantom crash. The story isn't as good as phantom crash, but who cares when there's more customization, arenas, and mechs?
>>
>>320820813
FM2 is better yeah, FM3 is even better still. FM3 is best in the series i think. But a lot of people prefer FM4

Why did the series die off such a horrible death?

It's too repetitive to be called that.
>>

Wait yeah it is too, i forgot 3 and 4 are really similar so i always forget 5 is a thing. according to cousin he generally says 3>5>4>2>1>>>>>>>evolved. Apparently 4 is great but it missed some of the magic in 3, and they removed some of the features and mechanics. 5 has a really awesome training sim though from what i saw when he streamed it. And the weapon/dmg system seemed really cool in FM5

That's evolved. You should really give FM5 a play if you haven't as it's at least on par with FM3 and 4. The friendly fire can be annoying but at least it got me to not just surround and enemy with mechs and link attack them to death like FM4.

FM5 is great, possibly the second best in the series but you NEED to have played almost the entire series up to that point to really get it story-wise because it finishes so many story arcs and background stuff. It's an amazing send-off for a franchise and thank fuck for fan translation.
>>
>>320821000
4 had that silly disjointed story where you're hopping between two different squads. I found it really grating. The story was nothing special as well
>>
What killed armored core by the way? PS2 late era? PS3?

WHAT HAPPENED?
>>
>>320821285
Front Mission 4 was kinda convoluted and didn't sell well. FM 5 was better but wasn't ported over because of 4's reception. In the end I think it was a bit too niche.

Shame. I really enjoy the presentation of the game, but if there's not much more to it than this then I shan't bother going on. Feels like it would have worked better as a turn based game with heat and action points as your resources. That would have let you target specific locations too.

Oh well. Thanks for the heads up.
>>
>>320823010
>>320823076

I personally think that FM4 has awful art direction and sound design. FM3 sounds so good and even with the low polygons, manages to have way more interesting environments. It helps that the overview is 2d with a 3d world.
>>
>>320824083
4 has a bad translation and literally craps out by cutting the dialog at the climax and leaves you wondering what's happening. But it has a few really enjoyable missions, and has the most of the infiltration missions of any of the modern games.
4A has a plot and narrative and has a "Hard Mode", the only one of the 7th gen games that do, which add replayability. Though lots of the missions go by fast.
V has 8 really meaty missions. Everything else is just as short as 4A. Though I want to mention they removed the arena ladder and replaced it with basically dual missions. So while there's more missions: there's less content. The story is individually focused but something's missing to really connect everything, and I don't know who to blame that on.
VD has 13 really meaty missions, and had an interesting take on arm weapons; and the story makes sense. I just am a little leery about recommending a game where you have to code an AI to build support units if you're playing alone.
>>
>>320824240
Looks like a hack. That handheld energy weapon is supposed to be only one of a kind in a normal gameplay.
>>
>>320824514
It's pissing money at me right now, i've played 25 games, bought and fully kitted out a light and a medium and get about 150k-250k a match, a mech costing about 5-10mil. *shrug* It's still expensive as all hell to buy something for real money though, i think the cheapest thing is about 20 bucks.

More than anything else, I'm just shocked at how playable it is, and how many people are actually playing it. The game was garbage, total garbage two years ago.

Ring of Red (PS2) - a SRPG where you play as post-WW2 mechs in an alternative history. Battles are tense as fuck, even against grunts. The only con is that it is really slow, it has a bunch of unnecessary animations for everything. Missions take 2 or more hours each, and there's 17 of them. Also DORA SHOT.

Gungriffon Blaze (PS2) - really awesome game, the only con is that it's in japanese. Also, it can take some getting used too, because left stick controls the camera, and right stick controls movement. Actually a series that started on the Sega Saturn.

Metal Saga (PS2) - a side-story of the relatively obscure Metal Max series. It doesn't have robots _per se_, but you fight in vehicles, like tanks and planes. If you've ever wanted a japanese Fallout (sorta), it's this game.

Musha Aleste (Sega Genesis) - a shooting game where you control a robot.

Assault Suits series (various) - There's Leynos (I and II), and Valken (I and II). Leynos I can be quite unforgiving, though.

MS Saga (PS2) - RPG where you can combine various parts from different Gundam mechs to make ungodly abominations. The story is kinda shit.

Another Century Episode 1, 2 and 3 (PS2) - awesome spin-off of Super Robot Wars, made by From Software. The only con is that they're all on japanese. Don't get Another Century Episode R.

Robot Alchemic Drive (PS2) - you actually control the robot from the outside (kinda like Giant Robo).

Omega Boost (PSX) - "where are the enemies" the game.

Gigantic Army and Gunhound EX (PC) - first is a Valken clone, second is a Valken clone with animu characters.

Steambot Chronicles (PS2) - open-world game where you create steam-powered robots.

Vanguard Bandits (PSX) - classic SRPG, you probably saw someone playing this once.

Kikaioh/Tech Rommancer (Arcade, Dreamcast) - fighting game with a ton of super robot anime tropes.

Power Rangers The Fighting Edition (SNES) - made in the same engine as Gundam Wing Endless Waltz.

Maybe I'll give it another try. I enjoyed playing it with my brother a while ago but got bored since I could never get enough credits to build my own mech and didn't particularly enjoy playing any of the free ones. I always thought it would be funny to build a Jagermech with six AC2s.
>>
>>320825092
>didnt want to use kinect
>controls barely worked
>>
>>320823207

Its main draw is the resource conservation between missions. Your mechs can get destroyed, the individual components you equip on your mechs can be destroyed and your mechwarriors can get injured and killed. Purchasable parts and mechs are limited in supply so you're expected to salvage parts and mechs from fallen enemies, which you can't do if you over kill them and cause them to blow up. The parts you salvage are also usually Clanner technology which are better than anything you can buy.

>>320824573

You can use the numpad controls to target specific enemy mech parts, and the orientation of the unit to the projectile being fired at it is also taken into account. For example, you can target the head and kill the pilot to quickly dispatch the enemy and salvage the mech and its components intact but the hit chance is pretty low, especially at the beginning when your mechwarriors are still inexperienced.

>Jagermech with six AC2s.
Gets fucked by the heat buildup unless you use it in a way that doesn't make use of all 6 of them.
>>
>>320821285
It was too niche, combined with the fact that Square-Enix had no idea what to do with it so they outsourced it to Double Helix. Who completely fucked it up, made an incredibly generic third-person-shooter (which includes being on-foot and in the Wanzers), a tight release time getting a lot of content cut (like large parts of the bland story, free entry and exit of Wanzers at will, campaign co-op, etc.), and utterly no real redeemable factor in the long run.

It pretty much killed the series. Which is sad, because it had potential. Especially given that there was a Japan-only Front Mission Online on the PS2 and PC that was apparently really, genuinely good as a TPS, but again.. Japan-only, and long since died back in 2008.

Fuck Square-Enix man.
>>
>>320824664
Makes sense, the closest I ever tried was kitting out Ryogo with a machinegun in each arm and getting the double shot skill or whatever with RoFups.

Pretty much wasn't worth since I had to use a power pack, hover legs, and the lightest shittiest body and arms.
>>
>>320825092
Kinect tanked that game, though. That piece of shit just doesn't work as intended unless you have perfect conditions and Kinect programmers whispering into your ear how to do motions accurately. Damn shame because I loved Steel Battalion.
>>
About the Front Mission series, I disagree with most here - I think that both 2 and 5 are the best of the series, and 3 is worst than them. Maybe it's because 3 was the first one most people played, but if you look into the other entries of the series, you'll see it dumbed down almost everything. The maps are unbelievably small, like 4 vs 8 all the time. Even in FM1, you could get battles of 8 vs 20, and in FM2, you can get as many as 30 enemies on a single map.

FM1 - Missile spam the game. Everything is kinda unbalanced, but missiles take the cake.
FM2 - Get the Greatest Hits edition, it has an option to skip battles. Huge maps, huge battles, and the combat system is at its best here.
FM3 - still good, but everything was pretty much dumbed down from other entries. i kinda understand not being able to fit 40+ 3D mechs into a single map, though (in FM2 they're still sprites, at least on the map).
FM4 - Dumbed everything down, except it increased enemy count. That fucking story.
FM5 - A good compromise between FM2 and FM3. The one I played the most, because squad battles are awesome.

>Why did the series die off such a horrible death?

It didn't. You might not be aware but 5 finished the series in a pretty damn outstanding way. It got five core games and spin-offs, which is more than enough for me. Ignore Evolved, though.

The kinect controls were horrible. I tried to play is for a good 8 hours before completely giving up. The only game that made me as mad as this was Megaman X7, because that had ungodly slowdowns during boss battles.

It's almost like you don't care about the story which was by far the best in 3. Not to mention two scenarios each about 30 hours long.

It was fun until they ruined the heat. (granted it fixed PCC totin fuckheads).

Shame that PGI is one of the most incompetent developers out there.

Gotta get em CoD monies. Weird that they did not opt for real life setting with Wanzers just entering service and getting their shit kicked in by conventional warmachines.
>>
>>320825641
I have other gripes with this game, the enemy count isn't even the biggest one. I don't really like the characters and their story arcs, and for the lack of a better word, they're a walking anime cliche. In the other entries, you play as battle-hardened soldiers and mercenaries that have trouble with a well-stationed garrison (like the Hell' Wall mission in FM1), while in FM3, you get those right-out-of-high-school people that can beat elite squads 10 missions in.

Well, at least it's not getting spammed with missiles while descending a mountain, like in FM1. You could get peltered with as much as 12 missiles attacks in a single turn.

For sure.
Sorta related, I used to run Shadow Hawk with 3 AC2s or 1 AC20 and it was pretty fun.

Every combat vehicle piloted by a human being has risks. It's not like jets aren't extremely deadly if mishandled or damaged in any way. Mecha and mechs are rule of cool with variable amounts of realistic logic applied depending on if the series wants to have a willing sense of disbelief or not.

Holy shit yes, I must've spent more hours on this than any other single game. I can't believe more games dont have an online system like this.
I remember reading gameFAQ forums about this before I bought it so I had a squad to join where I knew people would help, eventually left and started one for my friends and almost every random guy who stuck around would play other games with us/ sit in squad lobby chatting shit (before the days of xbox live parties and the only other option was private chats)
Loved the COMBAS system in it but xbox live party chat ruined it and made commanders pretty useless.
You could join squads and greif their squad chat and if you sat in the garage you couldn't be removed from the squad.
so many good times, M,A,V is fun but wont do the online as well.

Yeah, it's still pretty rough. Cyber's working on an overhaul of all the fundamental stuff (UI, lobbies, AI, sound engine...) and it's looking really good.

It just takes for fucking ever.

And once it's finished in 10 years there'll be like 100 people playing it for a month before it dies completely

Fuck, why can't From get their shit together and make Chromehounds 2 already and not make it an Xbox exclusive this time

>Pretty bad that it's somehow worse than the first game
First game was great tactically wise, 2D graphics were pretty much everything you knew and lowed about mechs of 90's.
It stands even now since mech designs of 90's were better than anything we had since then.

Story was complex and mature, when I met Royd in FM2, despite knowing why I hunt him I still remembered that fucking burning wanzer from FM1.
To add insult to the injury, Rocky was riding Raven at the time...

Combat arenas were surprisingly well done, it wasnt simple grid or few polygon mishmash.
Fucking cities and forests with vegetation and pools of water and destroyed buildings and cars.
Shit was climatic as fuck (that said visually wanzers were too blocky, they were improved in FM3 tho)

FM3 was simplified as fuck, web is fun and does a great job of world building but simple gameplay, smaller and simpler battle maps... its just a step back regardless how you look at it.
The only thing that improved were 3D models.
Story in FM3 is nothing particular but it has nice set of characters and does its own cool mood.

Its still a step back comparing to FM2, probably because it was aimed at western market, meaning wider audience, meaning same shit as always, we have to dumb it down so anyone will even look at it.

You get to skate around and fire shoulder-mounted rockets, sure it feels too fluid to be mech but it can be seen as mecha.

Besides, there's a lot Slave Zero does right: dystopian cyberpunk tokyo/china setting, urban battlegrounds, objects (even people) can be picked up & flung, scale.

Next you're gonna compare Zone of the Enders with Unreal Tournament. Since when is there much difference between each other when they're all about killing shit with guns?
