Predated WoW by a year. When WoW released and started getting beeg, SOE figured they'd hop on the money train and overhauled everything that was unique about SWG in a couple of large updates. Game turned into a shitty, dysfunctional WoW lite and started hemorrhaging players at a ridiculous pace. By 2008 it had like 20k active players remaining, down from roughly 1,5 million in 2004, so no wonder people haven't heard of it.

Yeah, though that was only at one point. The jedi system was changed several times, ranging from a ridiculously tough random chance grind for a permadeath jedi character to fully accessible to everyone, jedis everywhere scenario. They never found a sweet spot for the system, and probably shouldn't have implemented playable jedis in the first place given that the game took place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, when jedis were virtually extinct anyway.
