I always honestly just assumed the later ones didn't sell particularly well (Even by niche nerd game standards), which is why they've ignored it the past few years

It's probably both. I don't remember a lot of attention for any of the games past WLK, and the later games really did feel a bit stale. I heard the Vita one was awful.
