You're asked to design a brand new platformer; development starts right away. Your budget is ostensibly unlimited.

What's your gimmick? How are you going to separate it from the dozens of retro 2d platformers on steam?
>>
main character has visible genitals that take battle damage upon being hit
>>
You have the option to either "beat" the level or "spare" it. The story will change based on your decision to beat levels or spare them. In order to get the true ending, you need to spare all the levels, as well as befriend them.
>>
>>320792370
make the main character a women. never been done

Card and deck-building system where cards represent weapons, passive powerups, consumable powerups and enemy modifiers. Craft a good 'deck' to beat a level or git gud enough to beat it with a shit one.

dark souls meets metroidvania with elements of a twin-stick shooter

you play as a person who can turn into an elemental, but to do so you need to slay a few elementals of each kind (water, fire, air etc...) to transform into an elemental form, which gives you different abilities and also makes other elementals of that type not attack you

you also spend the different elemental points to level up, and each different type of elemental point would level up a different stat - fire = dex, earth = strength etc...
>>
>>320793269
>air isnt dex
nah
>>
there's multiple power ups in the game but you have the option not to pick them up. for every powerup you skip the next one will be one degree better. also the game doesnt tell you any of this

also dlc reskin texture packs for your visible exposed chode
>>
>>320792750
how about you only have a limited number of jumps to use throughout the entire game

>>
You play as an immortal. As you progress through the story and years pass in the game, the graphics go from super retro stuff to modern.

Also you have a talking duck companion who tries to rape you with his crazy corkscrew dick.
>>
>>320793621
>>320793390
you could also have attributes that require elements from multiple elements
>>
It's physics based, and you have the ability to manipulate gravity.
>>
a game where your character leaves a solid afterimage behind him which potentially traps or blocks him
>>
The protagonist is a tree person who breaks theie own arms off which are filled with tree sap, and they uses this as an adhesive to stick to walls. Over time your tree sap stream will dry off, and you need to complete small levels using speed and managing your constantly draining flow of tree sap to perform jumps or the level must be restarted.

It's an MMO called Labyrinth. Everyone starts in a different location and a lot of areas require teamwork to travel. Untold riches are hidden in the labyrinth, such as crystals that turn the player into a certain color allowing them to interact with certain blocks.

Deep within the labyrinth lies the end goal, the power to create and destroy tiles as you choose. Only one player may claim this power.

3d social game on an retro platformer. Each room is a platform. You can pay for your room to be represented by a harder jump, so that less people can access it and gain status/privacy.

Reduced gravity costs really fucking expensive, and people can create "quests" by buying teleporters to add to their rooms which lead towards diverse genres of games, various and assorted

It's called AFK. The "player" starts the game and leaves you "the game" on idle for a few hours. You start to get bored, and nudge the player character to the exit just for a change.

It's absolutely fucking exhilarating (you're narrated by the fable dude or something) and you start to complete entire levels, but as you go on, your programming defies your new found capacity for intent and the in-game world grows more and more corrupted as you play.

At the end, you've crashed completely and the player comes back to a glitched screen then turns you off and back on.

How about a Platformer with Psuedo-Realistic Time Control? Meaning it effects you as well as the surrounding area. Majority of the levels would be based on having VERY precise timing So you only have like a >.25 second window to make the jump, having the ability to actively slow the time to make that window a full 1 second or stop time completely and go frame by frame to see the frame data for the jump.

you're a slime and moving throughout the level makes you smaller as you evaporate

by absorbing different liquids you become slightly different, you can even try mixing liquids

spring water = regular movement and the ability to cleanse the area through erosion or just diluting toxic material
liquid nitrogen = turn shit into ice by going near it, creates platforms for you to use
ethanol = heat related attacks and the slight ability to transform into vapor and reform
electrified water = fast movement and ability to turn machines on
toxic sludge = slow movement, becomes sticky so you carry stuff, can also bind stuff together (like maybe holding a door open)
special blood = can create little blood slimes that fight for you or perform special actions

How about a 2D rhythm platformer? With your sword, you can attack whenever you like, but if you press the button only when the meter at the top of the screen indicated for you to do so, your attack is more powerful. On this meter, a pointer moves from side to side like a metronome, failry qucikly, with a circle in the middle; pressing the button as the pointer makes contact with the circle strengthens your sword swipe. Failing to do so actually results in a very weak attack. You need to make strong attacks because the enemies in said game can take a lot of hits.
Or if you'd rather, you can use magic. This involves engaging enemies by getting close to them and pressing the attack button, which causes the action o come almost to a halt in slow motion, and for the meter at the top of the screen to display a rhythm, which, if tapped to correctly with the attack button, allows you to pull off the attack, and for the game's speed to go back to normal. The game would involve RPG elements, so, you could improve your stats and such, get new weapons. Melee weapons always work like the previously mentioned sword, spells always work like the previously mentioned magic.
You can shield yourself, too. Pressing the shield button just before getting attacked nullifies the damage, but if you're timing isn't quite spot on, the action will, like when engaging an enemy with magic, go in slow motion, with a rhythm being displayed. Failing to tap to that rhythm will result in regualr damage. Too much damage accumulation can result in the shattering of weak shields, in which case you can just use your melee weapon, like your sword, to fend off projectiles, but this means the damaged will only be slightly reduced. Repeated use of this method can break melee weapons, too, so the player must be very careful and on point with their rhythm skills. high level shields would of course, be more durable, or perhaps invincible, but with drawbacks or something, like, reduced magic points

You are trying way to hard. The idea of Time Control effecting the controller is a concept you use all the time... "Time flies when your having fun?" "Uhhhggg, i've had a long day today?"

IF time control were to ever exist, the most logical conclusion is that it would be in the same style, where the controller is also effected.

>>320796476
Well, I can see where you're coming from, but this definitely would work. I have it all set out in my head, the speed of the game, the general design of the environments. Obviously I can't show that to you here, which makes this less convincing. But, for instance, jumping would not involve precision, it would be very smooth and floaty, to allow control. Enemies would generally not move around so erratically, in fact they'd be mostly stationary, the whole point of the game is to avoid projectiles with your shield and to attack when an opening is available. There wouldn;t be like, clusterfucks of enemies to disrupt your rhythm skills or anything, it'd all be very smooth and easy to control, and let;s not forget that when using a spell, the game stops for you to carry out the rhythm.

Card-game based platforming.

You build a deck with actions like jump, double jump, wall run, attack, so on and so forth.
Then you draw a hand and then have to play those cards in order to platform through the level.
The way to obtain new cards is to attack enemies and collect drop.

Also include a multiplayer mode where you race through the level with your deck.

You can break off bits of terrain and use them to create new paths.

Or you can just be a boring faggot and get through the level with refined platforming skills.

Give the protagonist a grappling hook equivalent that can span the whole screen length with mouse-precision, and some movement thrusters with limited but regenerating fuel. No jumping, just gliding or stabilizing movement for air control. Grab walls and objects to fling yourself around, pull yourself in and stick to walls or crates or so forth, or whip the hook around and release, tossing objects across the room at enemies. Force players to navigate environments and areas using their grappling hook and thrusters, with challenges like 'the floor is lava' for scoring / achievement purposes, and where linking some grappling around with a crate throw to smash an enemy down before continuing seamlessly on your way feels like skillful play. Boss fights come down to being able to take three hits before having to start over, giving players some leniency in avoiding the attack patterns before countering with either puzzle-based factors or throwing an object at a precise weak point.

A platformer/puzzle game where the character goes by themselves and you have to build the terrain for them. You would have access to different types of terrain/powerups to get the character through the level while simultaneously having to protect them from enemies/hazards because they're more retarded than an oxygen deprived downsy at a bernie sanders rally.

Player can generate platforms underneath them a limited number of times per level. (Possible pickups to increase it)

Maybe simplistic combat to more intense combat, depending on how strict the platform generation is. Definitely melee combat, regardless.

No gimmicks. I would just make a game where the player has as many options available as possible. Things such as dashing, wall jumping, triple jumping etc., so that the player is free to complete levels however he wants. This coupled with decent physics and complex yet intuitive level design would make the ultimate platformer.
>>
Your character automatically jumps to the beat of the song, you can only control what directions you are going, how much toy stay in the air or how fast you fall. For even more fun, give it some close-range combat that allows for a double jump that makes the song skip a beat.

It's so sad that we've locked ourselves into a non-raycasting rendering system as industry standard. It's disgusting.
