A lot of beatmaps are overmapped on purpose, leading to bad practices in the mapping community in general.
Beatmaps are largely inconsistent in difficulty (varying life drain? why?)
Over-dependence on mods as score enhancers as well.
The community is... well.
IMO it is not terrible, but BEMANI's stuff is waaaay more consistent in quality.

The problem is the extreme multiplier.
Let's say player A gets 330x combo and drops it, however, scoring only 300s on the rest of the song. He has let's say... 99% accuracy on the song.
Now let's say player B gets a 335x combo and drops it. He then has a mediocre performance on the rest of the song. He has less accuracy rating than A, but his score is tens of thousands ahead.
The point is that dropping combos is nigh irrecoverable (is that even a word) if one player has even a small amount of combo more than the other, disregarding all the performance differences after any drop.
Again, this is probably a design decision that was made willingly, I just don't like it very much.

I enjoy it. But here's the thing. I played the living fuck out of it like 4 years ago then kinda stopped playing and only touch it maybe every 4 months or so, and not for very long at that. It's changed too much. It's grown too much. As with any good thing it's just too crowded. I miss the old feel of it and the old feel will never return. It's stale, because it's too fresh.

I have played both osu! and IIDX and I can tell you progress on IIDX feels much better, and is also much more steady since it relies on more "raw" mechanical skill, so to speak (which you acquire no matter how bad you play), than osu!'s "precise" dexterity. However, I honestly wouldn't compare the two on the casual-hardcore spectrum, they're almost completely different kinds of expertise, so don't give yourself shit for not getting gud enough in osu!, it's skill ceiling is as high as any other rhythm game.
