Combat feels a little stiff in comparison to previous games.
They seem to not be able to get rid of this partner battle hardon they got.
Cast is good so far, plus I really really like spirit pacts, so I'm definitely biased towards this one story wise so far.
Regardless of whether you're a big tales fan or not, I'd wait for a sale, I know I did and its definitely worth 30 bucks.

Did you finish Xillia 2? I was in the same boat as you, I only played the game for the first 2 hours and thought it was gonna be bad, but after like a full year I decided to pick it up again and finish it. I had a lot of fun with it, and the self-insert MC grew on me as time went on. I played it right after finishing Zestiria and it really reminded me how some Tales games actually have polish and are fun.

I like the game. I haven't played many Tales of games but it was ok. Cast was great, combat was sort of fun (different from most rpgs that wind up on pc anyways if you don't really play other systems), plot is ok although the whole malevolence thing was poorly thought out.
Honestly my only real complaints are about the Fusing systems and backtracking. Fusing is overcomplicated as fuck and just not fun. And later on there's a fair amount of backtracking around the maps that gets annoying as fuck unless you want to spend a freaking set percentage of your gold to fast travel.
All in all an average game. Most people just have one or two tales games they love and this doesn't match up to it so they now hate it is what it seems.

It was a while ago so I don't have it on hand, but a few years ago Baba did an interview talking about Tales in the west and he said that the one game he wanted everyone to play in the series was Hearts because of its story, and then he remembered the game wasn't never translated and Namco had no plans to do so. (This was before the R version even existed so this comment ticked a lot of people off)
Hearts also has the best reception out of the DS Tales so that was probably why people wanted that over Innocence.
I've just picked it up and I'm having lots of fun, time seems to fly by when I'm playing it.
The only weird thing is that the combat seems to be pretty damn deep but, maybe because I'm still at the beginning, I haven't seen it used to its full potential yet.
