steam streaming

>steam streaming

So, it'd have to do Steam's thing better than Steam? How would you see that working?
>>
>>320756504
equivalent
>>
>>320756285
Actual support would be nice. I've bought too many games from them that have issues and their support isn't any better than Steam's, but at least on Steam most of the games will run and the forums are active enough that you can find some advice on what went wrong.
>>
>>320756285
Become steam in every shape way and form.
>>
>>320756285
More modern selection of DRM-free games. VMTB on GOG because I don't want to buy it off Steam
>>
>>320756684

Interesting.

>>320756771

What kinda' issues have you been having? Relating to the community, the problem is that people are very "locked in" to Steam. It's really hard to draw in a community when the majority of that community is already occupied somewhere else.
>>
Have a library on par with Steam.

Pretty much everything I want to play I can either pirate easily or play through Steam. Sure, GOG has some really good consumer-forward policies, but they lack the library to make it worth giving up Steam.
>>
Have the same library as Steam and grant me free copies on their service of games I already own on Steam. I have 600+ games on Steam and there's no fucking way I'm walking away from them otherwise.
>>
>>320756386
>>320756684
>streaming

Why? Do you actually think anyone wants to watch you play?
>>
>>320757019

No, see you've got no games on Steam. You've got 600 licenses that allow you to play games on their conditions.
>>
>>320757032
not that kind of streaming.

Streaming from one device to another on a local network. Its going to be a pretty killer feature
>>
I'm not sure what you mean by "drop." Does it mean stop shopping there? Or stop using my account?

In order to make me stop shopping on Steam, GOG would need to have all the same games and equivalent-or-better prices at any given time, because if I want a game and it's cheaper on Steam, I'm going to buy it from Steam.

In order to make me delete my Steam account, GOG would have to add to my GOG account, free of charge, all the games on my Steam account. Steam would have to do the reverse in order to make me delete my GOG account.

Regardless of what "drop" means, you're pretty retarded if you think a person can only use one online store. That's a console-kid mindset, which you don't need when you own a PC.
>>
>>320756943

A larger library would be nice, but developers, or more accurately publishers, are too concerned about piracy to trust a DRM-free system. The end of piracy would probably see more faith in stuff like GOG.
>>
Cloud saves
More games
>>
>>320757221
>Its going to be a pretty killer feature

Why the future tense? That feature already exists, doesn't it? I have an "In-Home Streaming" tab in my settings.
>>
>>320757231

I more ment from a "check GOG before Steam" kinda' mentality.

What experience would you need to have with GOG for it to be your first, go-to place for a game?
>>
Pretty much all of GOG abandonware catalogue cam be played at the internet archives for free
>>
>>320757390
Its not widely used, though. If you had an easy way to stream from your PC to your smart TV via an app or something, that'd do it. No dongles, no other hardware.
>>
>>320756285
Persona 5
>>
>>320757390
the hardware and support isnt fully there yet.

Its pretty clear to me that in 5 years time a significant portion of the pc games market will be a headless games server connected to a laptop or tv.
>>
>>320756285
Get the games that Steam has? I mean, the only reason i'd use Steam if I didn't pirate is I can't play it any other way.
>>
>>320756285

that's impossible because I have an account in both services and I like them equally. old games on steam tend to be broken
>>
>>320757236

I'd love to think that, but the reality is that no piracy would simply mean that more publishers would push the limits of what they could get away with.

Certainly some would show benevolence, but the majority would simply start locking down even more content.
>>
>Cloud saves
>Steams entire catalogue
>Big Picture mode
>The ability to redeem all of my steam games for free
Basically it won't happen
>>
>>320757393

To be honest, I end up checking Steam first because I'm usually logged in to the client already. My default page is the library, not the store, but having the client logged in makes it easier to check the Steam store when I want to buy something.

It probably doesn't matter much, because I end up comparing prices in different places anyway, but maybe some people don't.

Does that GOG Galaxy client have access to the store built-in? If so, good for them. Because it really is a great feature, in terms of getting customers to come back.

What GOG really needs is a bigger library. What they need is to have a lot of customers who own enough GOG games that they're logged into the GOG client on a regular basis. I think easy access to the store really makes a difference.
>>
>>320757795

That is a scary thought. I too think that if piracy was completely killed off I think we'd see more DLC, paid patches, """expansions""" and cosmetics.

When we have the option to get stuff for for free, the industry kinda' HAVE to meet us half way.
>>
>>320756942
I've downloaded at least 3 games that simply did not work for various reasons and my emails to the GOG support staff basically consisted of them saying that if the solution to my issue wasn't in the technical FAQ I was SOL. They allow refunds, which is nice, but I still won't buy from them because if I buy a game I actually want to play it. If I have to return it because it doesn't run properly I still don't have the game to play.

I'll be perfectly honest, while I haven't had the same issues with games I've gotten from steam as GoG (I've gotten games that didn't work on steam before but at a much smaller broken/working ratio than GoG) steam support is even worse than GoG's but I have the advantage of an active forum full of people in the same situation I am, which GoG just doesn't have. I'm not going to switch over to a different distributor with effectively worse support, a smaller library, and a less functional organization system.

could even just send them to a dropbox or googledrive. Just the option would be nice.
>>

Give me a copy of my entire steam library. At the very least.
>>
Get some fucking games. Their library is pitiful.

Offer better deals on said games than Steam.

Make me able to activate all my Steam games on GoG at no charge because there's no way I'm using two digital distribution services and there's no way I'm abandoning my current collection.
>>
>>320758081

>>
>What would GOG have to do make you drop Steam forever, /v/?

I can't think of an online game store that will actually troubleshoot/fix your problems for you. Steam, for example, doesn't guarantee that anything will work and, indeed, has games that only run on certain versions of Windows. Like GOG, they simply allow you to get a refund if a game is broken on your system.
>>
Not be called "gog"
>>
>>320758312

That's good.

I have a GOG account and some games, but I haven't downloaded the client yet; those few games are just a small part of a huge backlog (of which a larger portion is on Steam and a smaller portion is on discs). So I haven't gotten around to it.
>>
>>320758169
Also Family Sharing.

Me and my brother only get games on steam since we can share them super easily over that. All it requires is turning off wifi on one of our computers and we can play any game in either of our libraries. For all the "no DRM" talk sharing large games on GoG is way harder since you need to find some way to actually transfer the files, which for a game like Witcher 3 can be tricky.
>>
>>320758530

just give him your password and download the installation file, you retard

Would being logged into Steam and GOG Galaxy simultaneously have any noticeable affect on the performance of a real (non-laptop) gaming computer?
>>
Oh and no regional pricing bullshit.
>>
Release Sim Golf on Mac.
>>
>>320758403
Yeah, I know. Buuuutttt, unlike GoG they have a large and active forum that I can use to troubleshoot and I haven't had as many games I've gotten from them go wrong on me. I've never had a game on steam with technical issues I couldn't eventually figure out, I have had that happen with games from GoG. It's not entirely GoG's fault, but it's a service that steam provides to me that they cannot simply because of the respective community sizes.
>>
putting games pre-modded up would be a blast

imagine having option to download games with multiple mod packs to chose from and they are installed with standard installation

I know its a dream but It would make everything much better with older games
>>
>>320756285
Provide access to my Steam games.

I'm not about to lose out on the money I've spent on Steam
>>
>>320758624
> sharing passwords

No. All my passwords stay in my head and a drawer in my room. Nowhere else. I don't really trust my brother's judgement in computer security stuff.
>>
>>320756285

I'd rather own a license than an .exe so nothing.
>>
Have DotA 2
>>
>>320759112

then make a dedicated password for your gog account and share it. I can't believe that you think steam is a platform is where sharing is easier

>brother formats his hard-drive
>have to reset family sharing because that shit shares only to computers, not steam accounts
>you want to play your game
>he gets kicked out
>>
GOG should really partner with Humble or someone similar
Probably 70% of my Steam library is games that I bought on a whim in a bundle
If Humble started offering GOG keys for applicable games, I'm sure there'd be way more people using GOG
>>
>>320759509

I do have a dedicated password. Do you seriously think I'd be so paranoid about computer security I won't share a password for a game site with my own brother and not have different passwords for things?

With family sharing I have to change the password for him once, let him log in and authorize himself, then I can change it back immediately afterwards. With GoG I'd have to do that every time he wanted to install a new game.

Also how the fuck do you manage to get kicked out of family sharing? You just turn off your wifi after you start a shared game.

>>320758103
See I have the exact other problem where steam games give me a shit load of trouble, insurgency and metal gear solid ground zeroes was unplayable for well over a year. Full windows reinstalls would temporarily fix it. It's not a lot of issues but it's still annoying. Found out there was a steam error with a dll and I just had to change the extension so it didn't fuck up. But u shouldn't have a large portion of my library become unplayable because of a steam issue. And they basically told me to go fuck myself and reinstall everything. GOG even the ancient shit I buy I haven't had any issues. Steam causes issues, GOG has old games that can be buggy but I'll take that over steams fuck ups anyday.
>>
>>320756285
Same games and bug fixes (sometime steam gets bug fixes that gog never gets - psychonauts as example). I already use gog as my primary store though, so that's preaching to the choir.
>>
>Buy game on Steam
>Get cloud saves
>Get Achievements
>Multiplayer is populated
>Patches and updates are guaranteed, assuming they get made

>Buy game on GOG
>No cloud saves
>Most likely no achievements
>Multiplayer games are not always compatible with the more popular Steam versions (See Saints Row)
>Patches and updates don't always come to GOG

Those are my major gripes
There's really no reason to buy on GOG other than DRM free, which if you need a portable installer you could just buy the game on steam and then pirate it
>>
>>320758887
What games? I honestly want to know so I can avoid them since I'm filling up my GOG library
>>
gog servers for multiplayer games.
>>
Allowing me to transfer all of the games I have on Steam to GOG.

So, something that will never happen. Still, I like their no-DRM model better.
>>
>>320756285
let me transfer my steam library.
>>
>>320756285
Price-match Steam sales, and have all the same games(though that one is on the pubilshers/devs). I almost never buy on Steam when I can get a game on GoG, except when a sale comes along hocking a game for like $3 but the price on GoG has stayed the same for months.
>>
>>320760001
See I don't really mind issues caused by steam itself because they're the same for all games they're caused in. With GoG every single game is different and it's so much harder to figure out what exactly is up with any specific game. The forums are really the killer for me, just because it can be so hard to find out what's wrong with a GoG game. I don't really mind the issues themselves, I mind how difficult they can be to resolve.
>>
>>320756285
a big community that can see my chievos
and everything else steam does
>>
>>320756285
All it would have to do is have the games I want but can currently only get through Steam. I have no attachment to Steam whatsoever; it's just a necessary evil to me. I'm not as crazy about digital distribution as a lot of people are, but if I have to do it, I want to do it the way GOG does.
>>
>>320760163
Magrunner
Pier Solar

I also had issues with Q.U.B.E. and Rise of the Triad but I managed to get those working. (RotT actually just decided to start working one day, no clue why).
>>
>GEX goes on sale on GOG
>I remember GEX being fun, why not
>It's the original 1996 release, as expected
>Have to deal with the old ass menus to set up a controller
>Game freezes for about a minute every time I open a menu
>Realize I could have just downloaded the PS1 version for free
That and all the significant old games like FEAR and System Shock 2 that can't be emulated are on Steam anyway with achievements and cloud saves
>>
>>320760514
I think I've found exactly one fix from the steam forums and it was by accident and for a l4d2 fix that worked on my insurgency that hadn't worked in well over a year. I very rarely have issues with games but it's always steam lol my battlefront on steam refuses to launch but my GOG version I have running full of mods no issue. What games could you not get to work on GOG because I've never had an issue. Like penumbra series refuses to work on steam, but GOG once again no issues or witcher EE on steam I can't Alt tab, but GOG I can. Steam just fucks my games.
>>

i'll never understand why anyone gives a shit about this.

and gogs already on the right path for me. i haven't bought a single game from steam since the beginning of the year (sadly going to pick up dragons dogma when it releases).
>>
>>320761076
You might just be an unlucky Bastard like I am with steam. I've run magrunner across 3 different computers with no issues, one of them a toaster laptop.
>>
>>320756285

They already did it, Galaxy is great. The only reason I wasn't too hot on GOG before was because I'm too lazy to download installers by hand and update games manually.
>>
>>320756285
Trading cards (or something similar) and community markets.

I pull in like 30 'dollars' a year from that garbage, so if GOG facilitates some ways for random strangers to effectively finance my habits, the more I will recycle that money back into their systems.
>>
>>320756943

can't expand if no one is buying from you. if you like what gog is trying to do but dislike the library, try picking up a game from then every now and then instead of from steam.
>>
>>320756285
they need to keep improving Galaxy. It's a great client, nifty as all hell, but when compared to Steam it still comes up short.
>>
I already try to buy on Gog whenever possible since I can backup my games and do what I want with them. Too bad they have a low selection of new titles so I can't buy much from them.
>>

Games.
Games that steam has.
>>
>>320756285
I wouldn't drop Steam forever, but I would buy games from then whenever I can if they'd implement a proper wallet/funds and wallet cards system like Steam has. Just a lot more convenient to head to the store and pick up a $50 Steam card or something at the beginning of sales than doing things over at GOG for each individual game.
>>
even if it had all the games and features of Steam, id keep using Steam since I have the majority of my games on it
