They had a great fantasy-WWII vibe going and then they had to weeb it up with FF-tier over-the-top weapons, impractical combat uniforms just to show a little more ass, and crazy-haired MCs straight out of the shonen anime of the week.
Look at this image. The only remotely unrealistic part of it is the lances, which arguably work the same way as an RPG but are just held differently. Look at the hair colors, all reasonable browns, blacks and blondes in realistic styles. Second game's gameplay was a vast improvement over the first and while is suffered greatly by being on a handheld and a stock standard story, the game itself was amazingly fun.
As for best Valkyria. All Valkyria are shits, Darcsen are best.

I will concede that 3 does have better gameplay, but character and weapon design (such as pic related or Imca's gunsword) made it so that I never really lost my suspension of disbelief, so I never really got into it as much as I did 1.
