You can literally get a random encounter where you are surrounded by about ~8-10 bandits with shortbows from all sides during the first transition towards the Friendly Arms Inn map
And by then all you'll have is Imoen, you, Xzar and Monty, all level 1. Your mage can literally get one shotted easily there, so can Xzar.
And you won't even be able to get a sleep spell going most times before you get hit.

I enjoy the low level D&D because it's a constant struggle for survival. Every arrow you find and every potion you buy is very important if you want to progress. You have to manage your money and your spells very conservatively.

Play BG1 first; I used to recommend people skip to 2 because my experience with BG1 had been rather boring and I quite once I got to the city itself. But at one point I decided to replay the game and it surprised me how much better it was than I remembered. The story gradually escalates and develops in a very harmoinc fashion, more "open world" than BG2, and because it's IE the game still looks good. You'll also come to appreciate all the improvements in BG2 more.
