It's not about software rendering, but physics and LoD.
For example, you can limit the amount of GPU memory used at a time by streaming low LoD models/textures on demand or you can upload them all to GPU and select LoD there.
The former option will burden the CPU with LoD calculations.
Physics for cosmetic things like hanging ropes or jiggling slime in a jar can be done on GPU or on the CPU.

It's more common than not to have graphics processing either on the CPU or motherboard. You have to actually TRY to find desktop CPUs and motherboards that don't have some form of onboard graphics. Now, it's not GOOD, and it won't be suitable for gaming, but it'll display an OS and standard programs in full HD I can guarantee that much of any oboard graphics.
