Hey guys. I really need help with PS2. My uncle bough an old PS2 for his son. It has Free McBoot on it, we also have three Swap Magic Discs and some Coder disc. Only unofficial disk that somehow works is FIFA 10 that had save files and somehow Crash bandicoot Insanity Island. Me being a PC gamer only, i have no idea what half of the things mean but we have to get it going till christmas. I really need someone to help me.
>>
is it a fat PS2 or a slim PS2? if it's a fat, you should use open PS2 loader and a network adapter to run games from a hard drive.
>>
It is the slim version
>>
>>320729634
1. how old/competent is this guy's son
2. how did you run the "unofficial disk" on it? did it just work when you put it in?
>>
I watched like everything I could. Also, do I really need to do the straw, tissue and tape mod? Right now it looks like only the little piece of metal at the bottom right corner (seems like a pressure sensor or something) is not holding together and when I press it it kinda spins but not very fast. spin-break-spin-break
>>
>>320729934
He's 10
And I put the FIFA in, a few colors flashed and then it started normally working. (With the memory card with McBoot on) I didn't use the swap magic or anything. seems like only a few games can be launched through the McBoot. It always says invalid media format or something.
>>
>>320727951
Check its serial number, it shouldn't be 9xxxx. Otherwise you're doomed.
Though, if it plays unofficial discs, it probably isn't 9xxxx.
>>
>>320730153
Wel i am 100% sure the discs worked because he definitely used them a lot and said himself the PS2 worked
>>
>>320730128
>And I put the FIFA in, a few colors flashed and then it started normally working. (With the memory card with McBoot on) I didn't use the swap magic or anything. seems like only a few games can be launched through the McBoot. It always says invalid media format or something.

Redownload ISOs, burn new discs, check some guides for converting games for the McBoot to launch them.
>>
>>320730294
Isn't there a way to make it work like it is? We pretty much only have today because he is coming back tomorrow and he can't see it. Also I don't have a burner nor any discs here and it's Saturday sop there's not really a way for me to buy them
>>
>>320730128
i'm guessing it's using ESR, then. probably the simplest way to pirate games, you just need to patch the .iso and burn it to a disc. it gets tricky when you need to play CD-based games, but those are few and far between.
i hope that 10 year old is smart, most of the good PS2 homebrew isn't friendly to the tech-illiterate
>>320730153
if it already has free mcboot on it he doesn't have to worry about anything
>>320730435
if you at least have a drive that can read discs, can you put FIFA in your PC and tell me what shows up on the disc?

>>320730546
Also yes, it is using ESR. When I get to the menu it just says the media format is invalid. Can get you the exyact thing it says if you want
>>
/hbg/ will help you a whole lot.

What is it you're trying to do exactly though?
>>
>>320730884
show me a game that doesn't work. i'm guessing the ones that don't work just aren't patched to use ESR, and the ones that do have been patched. maybe the guy that sold him the PS2 also had a modchipped one and played unpatched games on it.
you should try to set up open PS2 loader to run games from the network:

Here, this one doesn't work with McBoot.
We just managed to make the CD version of Swap Magic work with F1 but that's all. Not it seems like it doesn't want to work again.
>>
>>320732287
i'm not sure why swap magic wouldn't work fine for you. are the discs dirty? is the PS2 lens dirty? i don't have many ideas.

This is a picture of the mod (the tape wasnt there)
>>
We have three DVD versions of Swap Magic and one CD version. None of the DVD versions load up. I think it might be caused by the thing in the photo from the post above.
>>
>>320732894
if you can load any discs at all, i don't think that mod is causing your problem.
are you interested in other ways of running games? open PS2 loader can also play games from USB.

hehehe

this is the menu that comes up when I leave the tray up.
>>
>>320733787
Is it what's causing the problem?
>>
>>320733824
if this runs real PS2 discs and also has OPL on it then i don't know what you want help with. little billy can use his new PS2 to play PS2 games and pirate new ones.
>>320733787
pretty sure it's a default option in free mcboot and most people just don't remove it
>>320733902
it's just an old way of playing games that was kinda crappy, it's not related to your issue
>>
>>320733902

No, no, it's just pointless to have that. It's not harming anything.
>>
So okay, what should I do now? Put the disc in, wait for the menu to come up, then what? If I go to the ESR menu in 95% of discs it just says the media type is invalid.
>>
Or is OPL solely for USB games?
>>
>>320734260

OPL is for games on USB, SMB/Ethernet or PS2 fat's internal HDD
>>
>>320734260
OPL can run games from a USB drive, from a computer on the same network as the PS2, and on fat PS2s, it can run games from the PS2 hard drive.
OPL doesn't use discs, if that's what you're asking.
what are you trying to accomplish that the PS2 doesn't do yet? what needs to be ready when it's given as a gift? it sounds like it works fine besides swap magic, which you don't really need these days.
>>
>>320734260
Create a shared partition with a DVD folder and it will work with two ethernet cables as well

You can even use widescreen hacks with that
>>
>anons helping out some guy to make sure his nephew can play his ps2 in time for christmas

I don't know why /v/ can't be like this every day, honestly.
>>
>>320734594
Sorry dude, I have no idea what you meant by that,
>>
my mod chip was like $12. this just seems like a hassle.
>>
There is no chip and they said the games were normally working before. But we can't really call the guy right now because he's abroad
>>
>>320735037

The discs that don't work automatically (i.e the ones that have the flashing colours) you'll need to use Swap Magic to load.
>>
>>320736364
Is that really the only option? because those with flashing colors actually loaded only with the m,emory card with McBoot on
>>
>>320734941
It's not a hassle at all, the OP is just a dumb retard.

Why anyone would use Swap Magic in this day and fucking age is beyond me. FMCB works perfectly when you don't have brain problems.

Either buy a fucking burner for 5 dollars, rip the isos, patch them, and then reburn, or throw the whole thing in the trash.
>>
>>320737031

There's two kinds of burned PS2 games.
Those that are patched for ESR, those that aren't.
Those that are patched will automatically be detected by FreeMCBoot and run by ESR. The flashing colours are part of the ESR program.
Those that aren't patched have to be run via Swap Magic. There is only one alternative to this, and that's installing a modchip. Otherwise you have to rip/patch/reburn.
>>
I needed swap magic because I only played beatmaniaIIDX
>>
>>320737197
Than you for the clarification. But there's a problem. I can't get the swap magic DVDs to load up as they should.
>>
>>320737691

OK, so you go through the usual swap magic procedure?
Load swap magic, go through menu, swap, play game?
And that doesn't work?
>>
>>320737068
This is my first time actually doing something with a console so if you could not be a dick, that'd be great. I also said that the console hasn't been used for two years so that's probably it.
>>
>>320737747
I put the swap magic disc in, the Playstation logo shows up and then just a black screen
>>
>>320738148
Also, the disc is still spinning
>>
>>320738148

Your swap magic disc might be fucked.
OK, try Cogswap. Got a USB drive?
>>
Your SM disc might be cracked on the inner circle, wobbles and can't be read due to the warped motion?

It's a pain in the dick to get mine to work, but it's no less than 3 retries til I get it working properly.
>>
>>320738271
Well I actually have three SM DVDs. I will try all fo them again gimme a sec
>>
>>320738271
Yup, I have a flash disk in the pc, I am currently downloading a game so I can try the OPL thing.
>>
Please guys don't let this die :'(
>>
>>320739649

Like I said before, /hbg/ is probably gonna have more longevity than this thread.

So do none of your Swap Magic discs work?
>>
>>320739734
The two don't and I somehow can't find the third one :D
>>
>>320739734
Also, what is /hbg/? It's not a board here... (I've been here for only a year, pls don't kill me)
>>
>>320740009

Well, shit.
Alright, well grab Cogswap. It's called driving.elf in here.

>>320740326

It's a general on /vg/.
>>
Okay, going to download it
>>
>>320740483
go it
>>
>>320741790
got*
>>
>>320741790

OK. Put driving.elf on your USB stick, put your USB stick in your PS2. More instructions in a second.
>>
Open the Free McBoot Configurator.
Load CNF from MC0.
COnfigure OSDSYS settings
Go down one to where it says "configure item" and just scroll right until you find an empty slot.
Open it, give it a name and put the path to the file on the usb in one of the path options.
Then save CNF to MC0. When the PS2 restarts the option should be added to the menu.
>>
>>320730153
Protip for retards: FMCB works on 9xxxx consoles as well, you just have to hold Triangle button while the console is botting and you get straight to Ulaunch. You cant have a hacked osdsys but you can still manually launch your ELF apps, which isnt really a problem.
>>
>>320742583

Wow really? So FreeMCBoot works on all consoles?
>>
>>320742684
Yes. The only real downside to 9xxxxx series is that they can't play PS1 cds. But FMCB works just fine.
>>
>>320742242
Okay, I did all the things, I am now going to restart the console
>>
>>320742989
Okay, I did it all, what now
>>
>>320743127

Run Cogswap from the menu (or whatever you named it)
>>
>>320743173
SHould I put the disc in now?
>>
>>320743305

Put in your swap magic disc, and shut the tray. It should recognise that it has a PS2 disc in.
Press the X button, you will hear the disc stop, and it will prompt you to swap the disc. Open the tray and swap it with the copy. If the display changes then something's wrong with whatever sensor mod you have, otherwise you can shut the tray and press X to play the game.
>>
>>320743484
Yeah, I've already tried that, my DVD SM discs don't work. But thanks :)
>>
>>320743616

No, this is different. You run cogswap, then put your swap magic disc in. Cogswap will detect the swap magic, it won't run it.
>>
>>320743702
Ohh okay gimme a sec
>>
>>320743702
Okay, done it detected it, what now?
>>
>>320744027

Press X and you'll hear the disc stop. It'll prompt you to swap the disc.
Open the tray. If it's still giving you the same prompt then you can put your copy in, press X and it'll play. If the prompt goes away, then your tray sensors aren't covered correctly.
>>
>>320744163
Wait so the disc has to stay open and the disc has to spin while it's open for this to work?
>>
>>320744453

Nah you can shut the tray after the new disc is in.
>>
>>320744453
disc tray has to stay open*
>>
>>320744537
Because when the! "PS2 DVDROM" appeared i pressed X and when I took it out it disappeared and when I putthe copy in nothing happened.
>>
>>320744861

So the message on the screen vanished after you opened the tray to remove the swapmagic disc?
If/when the message disappears is very important.
>>
>>320744976
Yup, the "PS2 DVDROM" appears, I press X, it turns purple and says "Use CogSwap". Immediately after I open the tray, it disappears.
>>
>>320745214

OK , so it's clear whatever disc swap mod is there is fucked.
Can you get a good, clear photograph of the PS2 disc drive without any disc in it?
Or do you want to stop working on this and try to run stuff from the USB drive?
>>
>>320745347
I will try to provide the photo. But the USB games see to be more viable. We can figure it out someday later. We just needc to make it work for him so he can immediately play. So yeah, Probably USB.
>>
>>320745504

OK, that's gonna be easier then. Do you have a decently sized USB drive that you can just keep in the console?
>>
>>320745597
Yup, it's pretty compact 8GB one
>>
Also, thanks a lot for helping me mate. I would probably be fucked without ya

Cool.
Well, let's get some more stuff.
Get a relatively up to date OPL.
https://bitbucket.org/ifcaro/open-ps2-loader/downloads/OpenPS2Loader%200.9.3%20(VMC+GSM+PS2RD).zip
You just need the .elf, put it on your USB drive somewhere.

Then make two folders, DVD and CD. Your ISOs have to go in the right folders. Any game bigger than 700MB is DVD.
Open each ISO to look in its files. New versions of windows do this by simply double clicking, otherwise use 7zip. You'll see a file that looks something like SLUS_202.38 - stick this on the front of your ISO filename so that it looks like SLUS_202.38.CrashWOC.iso or similar.

>>320746193

Not getting much out of it, sorry.
It's better not to use old swap tricks anyway, if you wanna burn stuff then use ESR.

Okay, it's on the USB. I guess I should do the same thing as before with the CogSwap
>>
*nevermind, I am reading the rest now :)*
>>
>>320746381
DO you know any good sites for PS2 ISOs? I looked at KAT before but there's almost nothing and it is not seeded at all
>>
>>320746836

Yeah, once all your files are on the USB stick then you can change the OPL to the updated version on the USB stick just like how you added Cogswap before.

If you want OPL to be autobooted, then go in E1 settings and change the "auto" setting to where OPL is on the USB.
>>
>>320747112

Emuparadise is breddy gud.
>>
>>320747112
Because I don't really know how to get those games from the discs. Also, it takes a shitload of time.
>>
also note that the PS2's USB ports are slower than the disc drive, so some games have minor issues like videos stuttering when you play them from USB
in those cases, just burn it for ESR (but you should figure out how to run games over the network eventually)
>>320747112
emuparadise has a good selection
>>
>>320746381
Ok I will now download a game. It will take a while.
>>
The thing that is bothering me is that everything worked before. Without a problem and it suddenly doesn't... We should be able to get those things running but it doesn't work.
>>
>>320747993

The most likely explanation is that the sensor mod was shoddily done and fell apart.
>>
>>320734696
because it's god damn boring
this is basically just a tech support thread
>>
>>320737815

>>
>>320727951
Not OP, but I'm curious

Where would I go to get McBoot installed on a memory card? Or is there an easy "diy" method?
>>
>>320748938

There's a shitton of methods.
What kind of PS2 do you have?
>>
>>320748938
There are a bunch of ways. Generally you either spend 10 bucks on an action replay, or just buy a pre-modded memory card.
>>
>>320749117
Fat.

I'm not too sure about versions, but I bought it new in 06

I also bought another fat so I could do it and in case any accidents happen.
>>320749169
So where would I buy that? eBay? Tech store?
>>
>>320749289

Then don't bother with the memory card. Get a HDD adaptor and stick an old IDE drive in. It's the most convenient way to play games and the PS2 will run FreeHDBoot from it.
>>
>>320749289
eBay, you dumb retard. About the worst thing you can possibly do with a softmod is maybe break a memory card somehow, although I've never heard of anyone doing that.
>>
>>320749389
Got it

I'll screencap this for future reference

Thanks a bunch!

The HDD adaptor is the same thing as the network adaptor, if you're looking to buy one.
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/unofficial-fhdb-1-93-noobie-package-obt-119562/
Just stick this on there and you've got a bootable FHDB installation, though some stuff may be out of date. Be sure you're using an IDE drive and that you can actually put the files on there with your current PC.
