While its not grinding or exploring, I've really been listening to the Serial podcast while playing csgo. Its only got like 14 episodes, but season 2 just started and its really good if you like crime and law stuff.

SF has always been socially liberal, going back to the 1860s when Leeland Stanford (progenitor of Stanford University) was making the state government his bitch (like Google does now, and like Cargill used to do) building railroads using imported chink labor while still preaching about the greatness of Eugenics and Progressivism (specifically as it applied to the food industry, which was the only one that had enough money to take him on).
In the 1970s white people left SF due to a) affirmative action/section 5 qutoas on apartment complexes b) restrictive zoning polciies that caused rent prices to increase and c) Prop 13 passed in Sacramento, fucking the state's tax structure since now individual cities and counties could not raise property taxes in accordance with market demand. As a result, most cities/counties (such as SF) started having serious cash-flow problems and the state had to increase it's income taxes and then give the money down to them. This also created a huge problem for millenials as now the only way to save for retirement in CA is to own land, and boomers now aren't forced to sell (due to high taxes) so there's a constant lack of supply despite increasing demand. Meanwhile food companies (like Cargill) imported millions of beaners to work in their fields as exploitable labor. All these beaners cause wages to fall while causing rent to increase.
tl;dr shit's fucked and it's not just muh democrats or muh SJWs, CA has had problems for a long time. I'm not even going to get into the water politics.

Basically high tax rate means pensioners cash out on their homes sooner, which causes the supply of homes to increase which in turn causes housing prices to decrease. Since property taxes are artificially low in California, while income taxes are high, in effect boomers get everyone under 30 to give them half their income.
All because libertarians cried about muh taxes, without realizing the market consequences of making the tax code more complicated by banning a specific form of it.

Everyone saw it coming, but nobody could do anything about it because politics. California had it's first bad Drought in the late 70s (during Brown's first term) but it was over in two years (before fields went fallow) and nobody wanted to pay the extra taxes to fix the water system.
The water system is basically a half built WPA project that dates back to 1930. Why is it only half built? Because the feds only put up 50% and nobody wanted to pay the extra taxes in the 1950s to finish it. All the levees in California are built and maintained by the US army corps of engineers, not the state government. All the state's water is managed by the federal BLM as well.
Anyway, nobody did anything because nobody wanted to pay for it. Then the current Drought came and straight up fucked over the Central Valley. The BLM shut off free access to their systems by farms last year, and there's only 12 months left for the water to flow again before the fields become permanently damaged due to dust. Ala the Dust Bowl of the 1930s (which is ironic given that many Oakies escaping that came to CA in the 30s).
Meanwhile, PG&E and ScE can just raise urban water rates. The state, only though a Democrat supermajority, was able to plow $10 billion into water desalination ($5b of which goes to restarting the desal plants at the state's three shut down coastal nuke plants). In the end, urban water customers will only have to pay more for water, but everyone else in the state is fucked.
The state has a similar issue with it's highway system, all of it was built and paid by the feds. Now that the feds are pulling out the state is looking at tolling it. It's also why $80b is going towards high-speed rail, because it extracts a use fee thus is partially self-sufficiency. This only happens because California is not a democracy anymore and is a one party state.
tl;dr this is why taxes for infrastructure ought not to be shunned. CA is also a good counterexample to democracy

By the way, by "extra taxes" it's not just Republicans. Democrats, until 2010, would always make a huge shitfit over water projects because it might kill fish or mud clams. But then the Drought simply got to the point where half the state is becoming a superfund zone, so it's do or have an unfixable homeless problem (interior CA counties have unemployment above 50% now because the farms simply cannot operate anymore).
Ever watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes? That's what I'm trying to get at here. California in the late 20th century was democratic, but to a fault and it resulted in the state bankrupting itself by 2010. Then Imperator Brown came back in for a second and third term (he had previously retired from politics after being booted out in the 1980s) and fixed everything (balanced the budget, funded desal, cut pensions). But it's also a one party state.

I occasionally listen to super best friend cast. But it's fucking three hours long, and I just have a hard time fitting that into my day.
