Sup, /v/. I'm thinking about buying a used modded PS2 since I completely missed it back in the day. What are some things that I should look out for when checking it out? Is that even a good idea to get one?
Also, Playstation 2 games thread, what are you favourite ones? Do you still play them occasionally?

just install your own freemcboot
its easy and if your ps2 breaks you can just put the freemcboot in a new ps2 and it will be installed

I still play my PS2. It's 13 years old, never opened it, never cleaned it (even though I should), and it still reads CD games, but still, I'm afraid that it may die any second now. What I love about the PS2 is that no matter how much you read about it, you will still find interesting games for it.

Its a good idea. Make sure to install freemcboot so that you can hook up your ps2 to your computer via network cable and boot iso games off your computer.

In terms of must-play games for start?

Jak series for platforming
Ace Combat for best trilogy on the console
MGS for sneakan
Silent Hill 2/3/4/Origins for spooks
Fatal Frame for spooks
Siren series for spooks
Black and MOH Frontline for shooting
Shadow of Destiny and Indigo Prophecy for mindfuck movie-games
Tekken 5 for fightan
Gran Turismo 4 for racing

Nope, 1988, actually, I just used to play on Pc primarily, still do.

You've done it now.

Emulation defense force incoming.

I think it's a great idea OP the games play best on their original hardware. Come play Resident Evil Outbreak with us at obsrv.org.

Looked up freemcboot, seems easy enough to set it up. Are there any particular things that I should check on a used PS2 before buying though? Besides the obvious stuff like if it turns on or not and if reads disks?

people your age don't use the term "back in the day" to refer to the ps2

I'm sorry, english is not my first language so it seemed like an appropriate expression to use. I meant it as "back in the day when PS2 a modern console"

Buy a fat model.

Check the network adapter area for free weed.

Dont get the very last series made (90004). They removed the ability to play ps1 cds on it and freemcboot has some, well, not issues but shortcomings.

You can also bypass freemcboot installation by just ordering a FMCB-ready memorycard off ebay. You are gonna need one anyway.

Might want to invest in a brand new gamepad.

i see, well ps2 isn't a bad console, maybe a tad overrated
