Question - have you ever played a game that has done 2D Mario-style platforming well?

Preferably none involving walljumping, weapons, any sort of speed gimmick, etc.

Just based on precise jumps, a variety of enemies, good power-ups, etc.
>>
>>320682423

Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario World

Next question?
>>
The 2d Mario games did 2d Mario-style platforming pretty well.
>>
>have you ever played a game that has done 2D Mario-style platforming well

You mean the Mario games?

yes, most of us have played the Mario games.
>>
>>320682423
Yeah, it's called Mario.

Pic related, it actually makes use of the variable jump height mechanic most platformers forget they have
>>
goddamn im bad at this
>>
>>320682657
yeah, i really wanna pick this up. have you played twisted dreams?

The mechanics are a bit more complex but it's a great 2d platformer in its own right.
>>
Shantae for gbc was a pretty precision platform heavy.

Super Meat Boy also exists for die hard platforming minus pretty much any gimmicks. Those N/N+ games also fill a similar niche. Both have wall jumping though.
>>
>see cousin playing SMB on his psp
>he's using fucking save states every jump or doing that rewind thingy like PoP
>ask him why is he doing that
>"because this game is so bad, like holy shit, i cant just run the entire level without doing awful jumps!"
>>
>>320683326
All media becomes degraded to be more palatable over time. Video games are no exception.
>>
>>320682657
GS games are all slow forgettable shit that only has graphics going for it.
Not a good platformer by any stretch
>>
>>320682423
DKC
Sonic the Hedgehog

It's true though that most 2d platform games revolve around a melee weapon or ranged attack of some sort.
>>
>>320684316
Twisted Dreams is hardly slow. Haven't played the first 2 though, you may be right about those.
>>
>>320684886
>art
>not a platformer
Figured. You're just too blind
>>
>>320683326
Well until smw the physics handled like a wet bar of soap at the prison shower with no lanyard
>>
>>320684963
Not even sure what you're implying here, autist..
>>
>>320685334
>I'll call him names that means I don't have to be an adult and be responsible for my words
Figured.
>>
>>320684316
the DS game was fantastic, and the original is an excellent game too. i don't know what you mean but i don't really agree with it. giana sisters has never been known for its graphics

>>320682423
but what do you mean weapons/speed gimmicks? super mario bros 1 even had sprinting and the fireflower.
>variety of enemies
the first super mario bros barely had four major enemies, with literally one boss

anyways check out hudson's adventure island/wonder boy. its fucking great

and i want to say rayman too if its punching mechanic isnt a problem
>>
>>320685659
>they're fantastic
Yet you've named zero reasons as to why they're good. You haven't made a comparison to any other game.
You've done literally nothing
>>
>>320682423
>Preferably none involving walljumping, weapons, any sort of speed gimmick, etc.
>weapons
Your screen shot literally shows Mario equipped with one weapon and using another.
>>
TF's my personal favorite platformer and it doesn't have any abilities that I'd say stray too far from your average Mario game.
>>
>>320686182
desu, the fire flower adds nothing to MB

If it makes you feel any better I don't like Yoshi's Island either.

>>

SMB is shit.
>>
>>320686847
YI was a nice experiment at the time. But can you honestly say that buttstomping-all-the-poles for hidden red coins is good game design?
>>
>>320687612
Yes. It's rewarding you for exploration. The stage scores aren't needed at all for clearing the game, they're only there for if you want to unlock the bonus levels.
>>
>>320685659
Adventure Island is not a good game series for the most part. It has serious problems with its continue system. 3 was okay and so was the one on TG-16. I never tried 2.
>>
>>320687708
>it's rewarding you for exploration
But you already know the poles are there. Stomping on them all is just meaningless padding. It's a chore, since the outcome doesn't change the means
>>
2nd ing DKC. Also MC Kids and Chip and Dale on NES. Batman NES has great platforming bit had wall jumps and weapons. Can't think of many more among ones I've played
>>
>>320688067
So you don't get the red coins.
>>
>>320688483
>reading comprehension
>>
>>320688542
>it's all meaningless padding
So skip it. You lose nothing since you don't care about the yields of it and it's not mandatory to continue the parts you enjoy.
>>
>>320685165
go watch a speedrun. in SMB1 you can consistently land on the edge of a pipe while a piranha plant is popping out. hell i can do it 80% of the time.

also if the physics were really that bad then mario maker would be a horrible idea.
>>
>>320688605
>moving the goal posts
>>
>>320688654
Actually I pounded the goal posts for red coins.
>>
>>320688709
Oh you're just a child.
Never mind then
>>
Donkey Kong Country 2 > Super Mario 3

you know in your heart it's true
>>
It isn't but it is better than Super Mario World probably.
>>
sonic the hedgehog is a closer sequel to super mario bros than super mario bros 3 in regard to its platforming purity and momentum element
>>
>>320690467
In what universe? Sonic games emphasize momentum, mario games emphasize exploration and precise jumps.

They hardly be more different.

you what mate. just because one level is different doesn't invalidate my point.
>>
>>320686406
It makes the bosses piss-easy.
>>
>>320688067
hows that different to all the puzzles that require you to break through more then one layer of blocks in smw? you know theres soemthing down there, because its got the first layer covering it. so why have two or more?
>>

ristar.jpg
91 KB, 400x300
I love Ristar, but the gameplay has nothing to do with Mario aside from it being a platformer.
>>
it's got pretty much everything you listed (both that you wanted and didn't want to see), but Spelunky is pretty great.
>>
>>320693513
That's really a false equivalence.
Those aren't puzzles. But they're also directly rewarding you, because you can see what's underneath.
>>
>>320695426
sometimes they are. breaking the blocks in the wrong order in that castle makes the reward unreachable. as well as that room loop, where you have to go through to doors a few times to make one of the blocks change into a hidden vine thing. first red castle, second island.

why not make it just be there the second time, instead of the third time. and if you dont break the blocks inbetween, it wont change.

>>320695796
not to mention the first mario game, with that level with 3 different levels and you need to travel it over and over till you hear a ding and memorise the pattern?

oh and the tricky, hidden starworlds. you NEED a cape for some of it, but you need to leave the area to get a cape, resulting in endless back tracking as you memorise the flying route and where each balloon appears. so on, so fourth. padding puzzles that do nothing but extend how long it takes to play it. all to unlock super mario worlds mario head koopas
>>
>>320696119
you don't need a cape for any of the star worlds.. in fact one of those levels has one of the hardest sequence of jumps in any mario game.

using a cape is just being a shitter anyway.
>>
>>320696260
regardless, unless you know the pattern before hand, its not really possible to get it right on the first try. if your not already low or high at those stages, you wont have enough time.
>>
>>320682423
Mario Maker, faggit
>>
Cosmo?!?
>>
>>320696119
How does that disprove my claims though?

>>320695796
None of this actually proves what you think it does
>>
>>320687612

no because if there's no indication it's there it's retarded and after the first time it's monotonous

even if it is only one stomp should take one stomp, there's never any reason to do one or two instead of three
>>
>>320699732
>it's retarded and after the first time it's monotonous
I'm agreeing with you there. Which is why I don't understand them rehashing the same flawed game 5 times over while managing to make it worse.
>>
>>320699381
well, i never said there WASNT shitty moments, just that they both had them. my only questions was how were they different?
>>
>>320700918
also, we got sorta derailed, but i didnt mention it, because you went from saying the butt stomping shit wasnt a puzzle, to it was a puzzle. otherwise i would of mentioned that other starworld level where you do nothing but spin jump down the entire level, destroying blocks. literally no reason for it to be completely filled with blocks cept to slow you down considerably.

ROMhacks tend to have a lot of challenging pure-platforming segments.

I got you, family.

Also the Donkey Kong Country games.
>>
>>320701151
At least you didn't mention Mario Maker, almost lost hope in /V/ there for a sec.
I just wish they'd make an open-source Mario World engine in which you can port Mario World hacks so I can play them without the slow-down often apparent in these type of hacks.
Also wouldn't mind the bigger draw distance
>>
>>320701151
Super Mario World has to have the best romhacks of any game ever. holy shit.
>>
>>320698515

mario gives up is great but what about mario gives up 2? is it bad?
>>
>>320703334

Not him, but that list is a bit old. Like, around 2012-2013ish old.
