Even if he didn't, which would be the most likely case, I think the way he handled was pretty elegant and fitting considering the tone and style of the series.
He looked at this foggy part of his overall plot and developed into a game, that's pretty cool. That is what he shines at and why people like his games, and it's what whoever takes on the series now will fail miserably at.
