Even the hedgehog stages weren't good. Whenever Sonic tries to do 3D it either ends in mediocrity or a complete disaster. It should stay 2D.

The problem with 3D Sonic games is that they end up being too much about speed than momentum. Classic 2D Sonic never had you running super-fast in a straight line for long stretches just because. Progressing in a level was all about building and keeping your momentum, which is why there were always so many downward curves and horizontal springs. The old Sonic games weren't actually -that- fast when you got down to it.
Why was Shadow much better at grinding rails? Always felt like there was some bug with Sonic levels but Shadow would stay on the rails like glue and do exactly what you wanted him to.
