I haven't played most of the Rare games on the N64, but I'm pretty sure most of them except Banjo-Kazooie would have aged like old wine.

BK is an exception because its production value is staggering to this day. I can't think of a more fleshed out, living, breathing game than it. And I'm an "OoT will always be the best" fanboy.

I played Jet Force Gemini a year ago, and I tried, I really tried my hardest to like it, and get back to the controls, and there are these brief glimpses of gameplay where it shines above all other shooters (like when you're surrounded from side to side with those screeing drones, and you have to think strategically to hit them all while evading their shots). However, the platforming in the game is so unintuitive that as ahead of its time as it was, it's like tipping over a cow. Once it's on its side it's not able to get back up without a little help (i.e. your imagination).

Nintendo's games have aged better. Which just goes to show, that even back in the day, their popularity was warranted.

N64 forever. PC and PS1 were not even in the same league as the N64 from 1996 - 1999.

is there a way to play this well on an emulator?

I have a choice with small stutter and inaccurate graphics vs accurate graphics with lots of stutter
>>
>>320564887
of course there is. a lot of speedruns are actually done on an emulator. not familiar with the best N64 one though

Maybe if you have shit tastes, N64 was objectively the best console of that generation.

In all fairness, man, Goldeneye plays like ass from a modern perspective.

Is anyone in this thread more of a complete dick gargler than OP?

inb4 starting a thread with inb4

(protip: no)

Cruisin' or any racing game is VERY hard on the eyes after all these years.

quest 64

it was probably always bad

Why? Might as well just list all of the ones you are aware of for yourself, and then not make a thread about it.

Also Mario 64

I mean if we're speaking from a purely graphics perspective, I think we can say they've all aged pretty poorly.

PS1 > Saturn >>> N64

jesus christ why is the n64 so shit

Most of them. Goldeneye has some of the most solid gameplay of any game ever made and beats the fuck out of most modern releases, period.

The only conceivable flaw it has it a tendency to drop frames of the original hardware. Hearing people claim the shooting mechanics have 'aged' is hilarious.

Oh you have no fucking idea how badly this has aged.

Dk64 didn't age that badly though.

So it was true that millenials invaded /v/

2000 was a bad year for N64.

>Paper Mario
>Majora's Mask

Then, nothing. And no, you'd better not mention Conker as a good game. That game is as terrible as it is profane. The only good thing was the multiplayer.

the character models are laughably bad compared mario 64 and similar titles

I actually just finished a play through of Banjo on my N64.

It's still great, but there's some painful artifacts. The camera is pretty eh most of the time but loses its fucking shit in tight or narrow arrows, like those around platforming segments. The framerate also gets pretty awful at some points, so much so that they interfere with gameplay.

Aside from those, it's still a blast with great worlds and a wonderful sense of exploration.

9.5/10

I think that's deliberate, to add challenge. It has to be. Otherwise, shouldn't it follow you immediately when you fall? I recall it stays in place and watches you pummel to the bottom and hit before rubberbanding to you.

Don't recall this aside from when Gruntilda throws fireballs at you.

DN3D and Doom are way less dated than Goldeneye in terms of mechanics.

Embarrassing since they were released earlier.

Maybe in some places, but there are certain places where it just freaks the fuck out cause it got caught on something or suddenly make a 180 degree angle turn so you walk off something. It just feels cheap most of the time if it is on purpose. Okay, you got me, I didn't know my controls would reverse for no reason and I died, cool.

I noticed the framerate have the most issues with the fall portion of CCW, probably the leaf effect or something. But even the engine room of Rusty Bucket, more water heavy portions of TTC, it was a pretty noticeable constant.

Still one of my favorite games ever.
