The Mother series of rpgs were almost universally shit, I fail to see why people masturbate all over them.
The combat was simplisitic as hell, the artwork goofy (even for its time), the characters simple in design and offered no depth, and on the whole it was just a so-so game at best.
The same people thinking it was a great series are the same ones thinking Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time were good games when they are objectively bland games now. Not even talking about the graphics and sound effects either, just the core gameplay being dated as fuck and feeling clunky and the story being bullshit (yet again).
A good game, even years after its release, remains a good game despite its release date.

I'm trying to play Earthbound now, and I genuinely can't get over how bad the combat is. I know this is a turn based game from the 90s but fucking Final Fantasy 1 had better turn based combat than this.
Also, fuck whoever thought it would be a good idea to put in a mushroom that randomly rotates your movement keys until you backtrack to a hospital. Tedious, boring and totally flow breaking.

Some legal shit about some aesthetic stuff like music that needs to be changed to be released in western territories(e.g. one song is basically the '60s Batman theme song) but Itoi doesn't want changed so Iwata's solution was basically a wink and a nudge but not an implicit endorsement of just emulating the thing.
