Game gets released tomorrow. Get hype faggots.
(yes, I realize I'm probably the only one giving a shit on the entire board)
I have it on early access since it got early access over two years ago, but I have been holding back so I wouldn't get burned out by the time it got released.
This one will dwarf Age of Decadence and the kickstarter crap like Wasteland 2 or Shadowrun. You heard it here first.
>>
>UNDERrail

Sorry, undertale made me forever hate any game that starts with under.
>>
>>320519127
I've heard someone mention undertale before when I mentioned underrail. What is that? Sounds like indie garbage.
>>

Into the trash it goes, its 2015, no excuse to make this boring shit.

Bought it a week ago and sunk about 13 hours into it. Been holding back too for the release. One of the better games to come out lately.

just another indieshit pixel faggotry riding on undertale's success
>>
>>320519713
Graphics and depth have been inversely proportionate to one another since I can remember. Even 15 years ago everyone expected tech demos and nothing more from eye candy games.

Then again, shit graphics don't guarantee good depth or a quality game. Case in point: every bethesda game ever released.
>>
>>320519954
I have no reaction image for this amount of stupid.
>>
What's the content level like?

These games are always compared to Fallout but it doesn't look nearly large enough.

I'd be more interested in these new isorpgs if they actually had the massive scale and content of something like Fallout 2.
>>
>>320518648
Looks good but I'm not a fan of that type of combat. I prefer something more along the lines of XCOM: EU in terms of isometric combat.

I've played Xenonauts and I didn't like that combat either. My favorite thing in that game was just discovering new aliens and tech and then reading about them. I think the thing I like about XCOM: EU is how there is no action point system and all characters only have about two moves outside of certain perks that grant more. I Also really like the cover system.

Nah.

There was a thread or two a few days ago, you are not the only one, it's just that most of the /v/ seems to be more into muh graphics/action AAA titles nowadays.

>>320520312
>I'd be more interested in these new isorpgs if they actually had the massive scale and content of something like Fallout 2.
The game is pretty fucking huge, especially the caves.

I played through all of the early access content once and have 71 hours in it. It will probably be well over 80 with release version.

And there is a few mutually exclusive factions you can join ( Protectorate/Free Drones and Oculus, Black Eels/Scrappers, Coretech/JKK/Praetorian Security)

There is alot of built variety too so the replayability is there.

It's true.

It's to avoid any bugs in the release version. I don't blame the dev because he was quite reluctant to make it early access in the first place.

It's nothing fancy, focuses on sniper rifles and pistols, no psi, some flashbangs, points into guns/explosives/stealth/lockpicking/hacking/electronics/mechanics.

Energy shields are OP, don't even need any armor.
>>
>>320525605
Haven't played with energy shields, I completely forgot they were added. How do they work?

And yeah, you just described the build I played with when I demoed the game years ago, lol. Well except I focused mainly on AR, those things are (or were) really murderous.

>Haven't played with energy shields, I completely forgot they were added. How do they work?
Basically they absorb damage based on the projectile speed. The faster the projectile the more damage is going to be absorbed.

So it's really effeective against things like lasers or sniper rounds, but not really good against melee and unarmed.

But you can make low frequency ones that, while still better at stopping high velocity projectiles, work a little better against slow ones than medium/high frequency ones.

All the damage abosrbed lowers the energy of the shield, up to the point when it just won't work anymore.

With high enough electronics and 100+ quality parts the amount of energy and damage absorption is pretty ridiculous, will post in a moment.

>Well except I focused mainly on AR, those things are (or were) really murderous.

Look at the numbers.

There is literally nothing I can't one shot, and it's not even my best one shoting rifle.

I carry all 3 types of shields, for different types of enemies and in case one of them runs out, you can't charge them in the middle of combat but you can swap them if you have more than one. Doesn't happen really often though, as I said they are OP.

Perfect time to self diagnose myself with autism.

Well honestly this seems like the game gets too easy after a certain point, much like in the demo / early early access days. Hope it gets balanced out, I like it when I struggle and barely manage my resources.

>>320527657
I grinded pretty hard to get those shields though, all of them are made from only 110+ quality parts and so are my guns, which are pretty rare otherwise.

It's still possible to die if you get stunned by shock bolts/flashbangs/psi users and raped by someone with a sledgehammer in the meantime, and my build isn't exactly good at resisting stuns.

70+ hours now, probably 80+ after the release, good replayabilty since there is a few mutually exclusive factions with different quests and a lot of build variety.

The cave system is really big, I actually got lost in them once.

Its popular.
Although if you want actual criticisms, its a great game but its extremely linear and some puzzles are overly simplified, and due to the linear structure of it you might find that backtracking is annoying since there are a lot of long empty hallways that were only as long as they were since they had something in them before. Its also so dialogue and character focused that if you wound up disliking a character it could ruin significant portions of the game for you.
>>320519550
Its an RPG about a kid who fell into a cave and now has to get out, but monsters try to harm you at every turn. You must try to escape the cave while discovering the secret's of the cave's history. Combat is half bullet hell, half SMT negotiation, depending on how you play it. You can kill monsters or negotiate their surrender, and this affects how others treat you in the game and where the ending leads.
>>320519713
>isometric means bad

I'm genuinely asking you to name other 5 turn-based isometric RPGs focused on exploration in a post-apo setting with things mutually exclusive factions ,no kill runs (yes it's actually possible to go through all of the content in Underrail without or at least with barely any killing) etc released recently.

All I can think of is Age of Decadence but it's more of a really heavy roleplaying game/visual novel hybrid focused on replayablilty and specific builds, so it's not really the same thing.

D:OS is just combat, barely an RPG.

Underrail plays like Fallout 1/2 mostly.

>>320532817
Honestly, I loved NV to death, but not for the combat or the character system which was utter shit. Better than in 3, probably the best in the series so far, but still ass.
If New Vegas had the combat of something like E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy it would have been the most perfect game of all time.

>Underrail plays like Fallout 1/2 mostly.

Yeah, plays similar and obviously has a post-apocalyptic setting but they're pretty different otherwise and I think a lot of people going into Underrail expecting Fallout 2.5 or something will be disappointed. Story and characters take a backseat to better developed systems and actually good game design overall. That fucking font, though.
>>
Did anyone play stealth much? I was actually surprised how stealth actually worked well.

>>320533481
Honestly, that's the right approach. The dev is a programmer who worked in banks before, not a writer, and English isn't even his mother tongue.
The setting and story are just about the right amount of motivating to get you through.
>>
>>320518648
I got it yesterday, made a character and decided to wait for release

No idea what to expect but the premise seems pretty cool
>>
>>320533702
Stealth may get even better or infinitely worse with release update which will add sound detection to the game.
>>
>>320533076
They all play different and focus on different things though.

Shadowrun Returns is not really my thing so I can't comment on that, don't like the setting ,like at all.

Wasteland 2 is custom-party based and focused on party combat, think Icewind Dale or orginal Wasteland.

Pillars of Eternity is literally BG2 but without anything that made it great and fun, I liked the way firearms worked though, it was pretty fun.

D:OS is just party-based combat.

It's all different flavours.

>Did anyone play stealth much? I was actually surprised how stealth actually worked well.
It's pretty good.

You can actually skip combat enitrely (at least I think so, I was playing a sneaky sniper) if you use stealth and talking skills, and as long as you don't wander into caves too much. You can still level up since oddity system favours exploration over combat.
>>
So is any kind of build viable (Charismatic pacifist to just kill everything Mcgee)? You're a loner or can you get allies with their own story/personality (or not)?

Guessing there is a demo, but I'm going out, so might as well ask and read the thread later.

I'm personally on the other side of the spectrum, since New Vegas helped me appreciate turn-based isometric cRPG's like Fallout 1/2 more. New Vegas is one of my favorite games of last gen, but there was definitely something lost in translation at some point there between trying to bring what made the original games good into the new mold Bethesda forced the series into, like the way stats and SPECIAL feed into things like combat and such.

I mean, sure you still have to specialize into certain skills to get the most out of them, but there's still not much stopping you from using melee weapons on a guns build. In FO1/2 you'd get totally raped if you even so much as considered doing something like that. Plus the way luck worked in combat lead to some of the funniest fucking situations that just aren't possible with the FPSRPG thing the 3d Fallouts are all about now.

That said though Underrail looks pretty sweet. Been following it for a while and it's cool that it's finally coming out.
>>
>>320533813
I think it only applies to stealth in combat though.

It will basically buff crossbows, unarmed, melee (except for sledgehammer) and handguns while nerfing everything else.
>>
>>320534029
The demo is very outdated, iirc. It's 2-3 years old, but still very good. I spent about 10 hours in it.

The great thing about underrail, tho not sure if this goes for the demo as well, is the oddity exp system (which is optional though) so there's no need to kill everything in sight to max out that exp so yeah, a stealthy pacifist is very much viable.

You're a loner, no companions whatsoever. And I'm personally ok with that, it adds to the isolated and lonely atmosphere.
>>
>>320534029
>So is any kind of build viable
Pretty much.

>Charismatic pacifist
The game is kinda combat heavy but I think it's actually possible to do a pacifist run if you invest into stealth and all talking skills heavily.

You can skip combat most of the time by sneaking and talk your way out of scripted events.

Some of the sidequest require you to kill things and most areas are full of hostiles though, so it's going to be pretty awkward I guess.

> You're a loner or can you get allies with their own story/personality (or not)?
Loner.
>>
>>320533990
Oh right there's also Krater!
So we have
Krater
Shadowrun returns
Wasteland II
AOD & POE as you mentioned (I won't count that)
and I'm still looking for more.
I think Krater might be the most similar thing but not exactly what this game offers.
You bring a good point though that this is the only game with this sort of theme. I might give it a try and actually end up liking it but my main argument point against is that FO1+2 exist and a fair amount of games that try and emulate it's style but all draw something different out of it.
>>
>>320533990
I picked the game up last night after reading about it and seeing in the dev notes the price is going up with release.

I played about 2 hours and gotta say I really enjoyed it. It panders to the "here's the world, you figure it out" mentality that I loved about Fallout and other games in the 90s. I also am enjoying the lack of overly developed plot. A lot of games lately have been crawling up their own asses with their stories it's nice to see a game being made that's actually a fucking game.

Looking forward to playing it more after releaee. My only gripe is THE FUCKING FONT. I really hope they let you re-size it or make it bigger for higher resolutions cuz that neon green on black background and that miniscule size is gonna wreck my eyes.

I actually don't because game was in development for so long its creator probably made it on 17" monitor or something and never took a step back to re-evaluate how the UI looks on modern widescreen monitors. Age of Decadence had the same problem in the combat demo, but they reworked UI since those early days.

How's the build variety when it comes to combat?
Is throwing or melee viable or are guns the obvious go to with the former being situational?
>>
>>320536702
It doesn't hold your hand.
It doesn't treat you like an idiot.
It's an actual game that requires strategy and thought to overcome a challenge.
It has an option to give exp based on exploration and quests instead of killing.
Most playstyles are viable as long as you build your character that way.
Music is moody and fits aesthetic
Game focuses on combat, so it's actually done well and requires you to think tactically
It's only $10

What he said
>>320537032

Although to me the combat and character variability is the highest selling point.
The game really does everything right where so many have failed. Like one really great example is how snipers in fallout are an instant gamewinner, while here they have a penalty at close and medium range so you can't abuse them for any situation.

>>320537181
You can go psi, a variation on guns from assault rifles to pistols, smgs and shotguns, melee, stealth projectile (crosbows). Everything in the game is viable.
>>
>>320537331
>>320537032

Shit, I really, really like games that have exploration and lore. I once got lost in some abandoned dwarven mines in Realms of Arkania 2 for over ten hours, and completely ignored the main questline because they were just that fucking thrilling to explore and learn the lore of it.

Unless you really invest in crafting, make a custom sniper rifle with lower AP cost and move/short range penalties, and add a mod to further decrease these penalties.

I've had the early access for a while. The one problem I had with it was pretty much the same as I always have with these types of games; there's usually some worthless skill or build type and there's no way of knowing what it is until you're 20 hours in and doing half the damage you should be.

Low INT, you sure you don't want to craft? There are some cool things to be made, to help you sneak better.

One thing though, don't expect to stand there dodge and evade every attack, even with high skill scores. In terms of defense, heavy armor is superior. So get a shield asap. Shields deplete with every hit you take, so high evade+dodge builds work best with them.

As for drugs, it depends on the build, I guess. Can't say how psi will be in the full version, but right now, it hardly needs any help to kill everything.

or you could play Elite:Korean Grindfest and get both shitty game play and garbage graphics!!

also 60 dollary doo season pass, with every year bringing out content that should have been in the main game!!!

Glad to see games like Underrail and Age of Decadence getting attention. It's been a decent year.

Nice. Maybe I'll get that much as well. I test my builds in Fort Apogee, you do that with that stealth sniper and see how much you score on a Dreadnought. And how long you'll survive.

I think it also depends on a build.

My sniper literally one shots everything, even the mechs, can get up to 3 shots a turn with adrenaline shot, and energy shields make him pretty tanky even with his shit CON.

That'll work, but remember - foes love to use stun, incapitation etc. so be careful. While amor works while you are stunned, dodge and evade don't In most cases a stun will be the death of you.

rapid fire is crazy on the .44 with all the crit enhancing feats and W2C bullets. with RNG on your side you can get 3 1000+ crits in a row

Unreliable as shit, minimal damage is far superior unless you like to savescum.

9mm neoluger for life.

Holy shit, did the dev shit in half of /v/'s coffee or something? What's with the super bitchy posts?
>>

underrail rhymes with undertale. also /v/ loves shitposting about old-school rpgs because it's guaranteed replies from literally anyone who actually cares about the state of vidya today

It doesn't change the shit minimal damage though.

But for me a pistol is a reliable backup when things get too close and I can't use my sniper effectively.

look at this senpai. worst-case scenario the .44 only does 7 less damage than the luger. but has 20 more average damage and 40 more damage in a best-case. not to mention the extra crit damage bonus. come on son.

You do realize tha .44 has a better
quality frame than that luger, right?
>>
>>320551358
they're both q50 m8. hence they have the same durability
>>
>>320551510
Right.

But I'm still going for the minimal damage. Last thing I want is to be depended on luck.
