Sonic 3 and Knuckles is my favorite game.

Complaints? I'm not a fan of Marble Garden, or Sandopolis Zones. I believe it's because both of them feel too slow for me, and aren't as great as the rest of them. Though they do offer good variety because of the change of pace.

Best Music, Best length, Best Zones, Best special Zones, Best Characters, Best Final Boss (and extra Final Boss). Just amazing overall.

Sonic 2 is a close second though, I also consider that game to be pretty much perfect. But 3 and Knuckles just offers more.

Also this only applies to the both of the games together. Alone they are solid, but Sonic 2 would rank higher.

Just awful. I bet the person who designed that level had a hand in designing the awful garbage levels in Sonic CD as well. Tragic, dreadful, hamfisted, scatterbrained level designs.

And Mushroom Hill's music is shit as well. When the "first level" of a Sonic game has shit music, it's time to stop caring about whatever game that is.

Flying Battery Zone is a masterpiece though somehow. That level is just right.

Personally, for me, it was that Sonic 1 was my first game and Sonic was a big part of growing up for me. I got Sonic & Knuckles for Christmas (was late on Sonic 3, other two I got at launch), then I found a kid down the road HAD Sonic 3 after I beat Sonic & Knuckles. Plugged them together and holy shit. I couldn't get away from my Mega Drive for months. It's part nostalgia, but part being that it's just such a pleasure to play through each time and I still find new things to this day occasionally.

This is a logical fallacy though. Because it's something you CAN do in the game that was a focus of advertising, people think the game is ABOUT that and become disappointing when they can't do it.

It's like saying Super Mario World is awful because it's a game about flying with a cape but you hardly ever get a situation to do it.

Sonic's entire fucking point which is shoved down your throat in every bit of media and merchandise for the character is going fast. The levels are set up to go fast, but unless you memorize obstacles you don't get to actually do it.

The Genesis Sonic games' selling points was speed, and there's a lot of speedy spectacle moments in them, but if you want to go fast outside of those you'll just have to master how the momentum mechanics work.
