I think post-modern works are works where a game is intentionally weird for the sake of trying to make the viewer/reader/player unsure of whether or not the work is referring to the real world, the own work's universe, or both. MGS2 is considered the first post-modern video game for this reason.

And there are different art styles within the realm of pixelart. I too would appreciate more heavily detailed pixelart ala a PC98 work or the best of Metal Slug, but its not as if that's the only thing. Compare, say, the visuals of Nidhogg to say, Cave Story, and then compare Cave Story to Hyper Light Drifter, and then compare that to Momodora. None of the games look remotely similar in artistic design, but they all use pixelart. You don't need extreme detail to look good, necessarily. (For the record, I think Nidhogg looks like shit but I just wanted to mention it as something that could be used to compare different artistic design in pixelart)
