What happened to the RTS genre /v/?

I miss the days of Age of Empires where high level play meant that the game would last for hours. Thesedays RTS games never seem to last more than 10 minutes, with all units geared around rushing the enemy.

Are there any good, modern long play RTS games? Have I just been missing them?
>>
Age of Empires and Company of Heroes defined the genre and nobody wants to challenge them so they just keep making Starcraft clones

Don't work on consoles and most people can't multitask to save their lives.

>>320488779
It achieved something that no other genre has, it achieved perfection.

Thats why all modern RTS games are terrible, they cant achieve perfection since it has already been achieved.

You never watched or played at a high level then. AoE2 was all about rushing. Competitive games ended extremely quickly.

not really. your other point still stands.

Competitive games of AoE II can actually end quite quickly, anon. Age in particular (excluding Mythology) just moves a bit slower than some other RTS games.

>>320489567
So why don't 8th consoles implement KB/M controls, then? At this stage they're technically x86 prebuilts.
>>
>>320488779
e-sports happened. there is no remotely casual audience anymore, because all of us shitters know that when we beat single player it's like we've just managed to float in the kiddy pool, meanwhile Michael Phelps is DPing our gal in the back with his olympian double penis. SCBW killed RTS.
>>
>>320489803
>was

aoe2 competitive scene is more advanced right now than it ever was. you can watch the twitch streams and see

basically the 4v4 games can still last a very long time and are really complicated. but yea 1v1 it can be over in 15 minutes but they play alot of games to account for the randomness of the maps

Since when have 4v4 modes ever been considered competitive in RTS games?

Oldfags keep blaming the kids but truth is they killed the genre themselves by obsessing over the fastest way to win over fun.

Has anybody ever made a City Builder RTS with multiplayer?

AoE 2 sucks competitevely. It's Aztecs vs Huns the game. Or Vikings vs Vikings if it is a water map.

>>320489902
>So why don't 8th consoles implement KB/M controls, then? At this stage they're technically x86 prebuilts.
Because the selling point of consoles is that they don't have a mouse and keyboard. If you add a mouse and keyboard to a console then you just have an overpriced, underpowered PC that can only run the operating system and play the games that the manufacturer allows.

Well you know, people grew up and got these things called a job, so they don't have the time to play a game for hours in one sitting.
>>
>>320490593
Age of Empires has a few little niggles like bad pathfinding and lack of a few modern features like autoexplore.
It would be nice to have an update of AoEII every few years that just folded some modern features in and left the balance the same.

>>
>>320490759
Well, AoE2 HD added some modern features such as move-attack
>>
>>320490759
AoM had some nice QoL improvements to the interface compared to AoE 2, the Shift-RMB waypoints especially were much better. For instance, you could send off a builder back to chopping wood when he's done as opposed to hitting the idle villager button and reassigning him manually. It also made scouting much more easier.

There was also an idle military banner, and the idle villager button only appeared when one was actually idle.

Exactly, I totally agree with you. Lording these deluded idiots over with our nonsensical posts gives us an actual and real sense of power. Glad that we share the same actual responsibilities and goals in life.

>sensible people

Yeah. You should teach them how to be less sensible, you seem the right person. When you will have enough time, obviously.

Daily reminder that Starcraft 2 needs a genuine competitor, backed by a large publisher and crafted ith intricate skill to revive the RTS-genre. That will never happen
>>
>>320493083
I remember watching some 2 player Supcom pro games way back when it was newish. It was fucking awful. Any water totally imballanced the sides making one race only for use on water maps and early attacks were allways met with a suicide commander strike resulting in a draw.

Most of the games that got past that were mass clicking on trees and using tricks to shoot aircraft through shields.

Pity, the game could have been awesome at high level play.
>>
>>320494520
SupCom was definetly not balanced for pro gaming, but 4+ games were intense and exciting
>>
>>320494520
you could just set engineers to move+attack or patrol and they will harvest mass automatically

Micro / Build Orders / Rushing makes it boring for even the skilled layman. I love RTS games but if you want to have even a sliver of a chance to play them well you need to memorize a fuckload of shit and have a really good APM, if you can't do those two things you literally cannot compete on even a basic level.
>>
>>320490084

This. Similar to other 'esports' and competitive games players want to emulate pros because they're the best.

Just so happens that the best RTS players are fucking insane asian ricemachines, so to compete you're either operating on an entirely different level, in terms of micro, hotkeys, actions per minute and min maxing your build order for the fastest win possible that even being a minute behind your opponent means you're fucked and have no chance at being competitive with other players, so instead of learning and getting better people get discouraged by the massive skill floor.

Even the average player who enjoys the games can't compete which is why WC3 had such a great custom scene relative to it's actual game scene.
>>
I just wanted to mention that pro-gaming or esports has lost all it's value and meaning. MOBAs are played on a professional leve, which is a joke, and even games on consoles (Call of Duty, halo) have a ''respected'' esport-scene.

Even fucking command and conquer has more competetive value to it, than 50% of the esport-games out there
>>
>>320499179
Well, there's only so much macro you can remove before the game plays itself. Like take AoE2, you could include features like auto-build when resources are available, auto-recruit villagers,, auto-scouting, and that'd already remove a bunch of the tedious aspects. But how much can you do apart from that?
>>
>>320500480
Actual strategic planning
>>
>>320500554
No, I meant in the sense of automizing stuff that's not particularly skillful
Like, properly kiting with archers takes a lot of apm, but it's also a big factor differentiating players from each other. You could intoduce an auto-kite feature, but then the skillcap would also take a considerable hit
