A)Sells more copies of Smash
B)Sells the DLC
C)Gets people more hyped for potential of next Smash game which at this point you KNOW will be coming with the next console because Smash is a guaranteed console seller

It gets me less hyped when they're blowing the big names on DLC. At this stage they've already featured the most prominent character in most the big Japanese companies and have exhausted most of their own library.
With the exception of Inklings they don't really have many new characters for themselves so what could come from a new Smash other than repetition or taking lower priority characters from the same companies?

I hope Smash skips the next gen because it's getting a bit stale at this stage, a bit of time would let exciting characters build up again. The ideal thing would have been porting Smash 4 to NX and continuing to support it for the next couple of years but I guess thats not the Nintendo way.
