Because the old developers were making a new game completely unrelated to Homeworld, since they didn't own the IP, and then Gearbox said they could use the IP for free. Now it looks like they've joined up, since you're getting the Homeworld remaster for free when you preorder.

And now onto the "Official" announcement

Which is weird, cos at first it implied it was set /somewhere/ in the Homeworld Universe, but not set on Kharak.

So this is weird.

I'm scared Gearbox is yanking the chain to get this into sellable shape.

Homeworld 1 is hands down better than homeworld 2 unless you don't give two shits about gameplay.

I just really didn't like how the UI worked, felt very odd after years of playing C&C, WC etc. and HW2 is so much more streamlined so it feels like a massive step backwards.

Although the game is quite old now and there weren't many 3D strategy games around that had tested the waters.
>>
>>320413467
Development worked like this:

>Old homeworld 1 devs want to make a new game together like old times
>gonna make a new rts game, but on the ground
>don't have the IP, so settle with something new while keeping the homeworld vibe/aesthetics
>start to prepare kikestarter and crowdfunding for the game, planning on f2p with lots of DLC
>gearbox goes, "yo, this shit tite, we'd be willing to fund and publish you guys"
>devs realize gearbox has homeworld IP and asks if they can make it a homeworld game
>gearbox goes aight

And that's how we got this.
>>
>>320409026
Did you ever read the manual for Homeworld?

It had like 100+ pages describing the various wars and Clans on Kharak. All of the history, all of the shit that went down before the game even started.

There is a huge wealth of material for a game there, although I am extremely surprised that somebody actually went and did it.

For all the post launch fixes, I don't they'd be able to "Remaster" HW1 without using a physics/ballistic engine from the ground up.

Each shot having weight, direction and speed is what tied everything; size of the ships, speed, formations, positioning, grouping, together.

The HW2 "lolol RNG hitscan time" broke the camels back horribly.

I agree, the would have to make a whole new engine if they wanted to make a pure HW1 remaster. Something like that is just not feasible in the time frame they worked in. I guess porting HW1 to HW2 engine was the best option they had considering how ancient HW1's engine was.

Yes, and I fucking regret it.

They could have actually put some effort into it and ported Homeworld 1 with a properly functioning physics engine.

Instead they literally just replaced homeworld 2 assets with high def homeworld 2 assets and added new homeworld 1 assets to homeworld 2 and called it a day. One of the lowest effort scams I've ever witnessed in the industry.

Not him, but for 1 weapons weren't hitscan which had a huge effect on things like positioning, as homeworld 2 used a %chance to hit, and also squad formations didn't hold when entering combat, or they didn't have them I forget which, while they were very useful in homeworld 1. The gameplay just felt better.

>>320414714
The fundamental mechanic is the physics engine.

Homeworld 2 doesn't have a physics engine, it has a bunch of scripts to make shit fly around and pretend there's a physics engine.

So as a result: No proper collisions, no physics based projectiles (which adds A LOT to how certain ships are used), no actual ship formations, no REASON to use ship formations, no friendly fire, and so forth.

It's a lot of little things that together add up to big things that fundamentally change how the game works and plays. Homeworld 1's gameplay is fun, homeworld 2's gameplay is not.

Just to take one example:
With physics based projectiles, tight formations are dangerous because massed fire that misses a target can still hit something next to it, and ships in a tight formation also risked shooting each other - so a ball formation is great for shooting outwards in all directions, but awful if you want to maximize firepower in one direction (unless that direction is inwards at the center of the ball). It's something that added a lot more depth to the gameplay.

I dont think they had a choice with out having a long development period. Referring to my post above:

>they would've had to make a whole new engine if they wanted to make a pure HW1 remaster. Something like that is just not feasible in the time frame they worked in. I guess porting HW1 to HW2 engine was the best option they had considering how ancient HW1's engine was.

Creating a new engine from scratch let alone overhauling two engines for separate games is just not feasible within a period of less than a year for development of two remastered games. I will give praise to Gearbox for what they were able to do with HW2's engine and the fact that they completely overhauled its engine and graphics and sound to a modern standard, rather than a AoE/tim-schafer "HD Remaster" where they just slightly up the texture resolution and make the game 1080p or 4k compatible.
>>
>>320415132
Just to emphasize how pointless the homeworld remaster was: Homeworld 2 ALREADY had people adding graphical additions to it and ALREADY had a homeworld 1 mod where they just added the homeworld 1 assets to the game.

The remaster was literally just a more polished version of already existing FREE mods.
At best they got around some of the hardcoded limits on textures and added new shaders that modders couldn't.

Now, i am not the biggest expert in homeworld lore and you are free to prove me wrong, but i hate how shipbreakers is set in Kharak instead of the Vagyr homeworld.
In the first one, the colony ship discovery was a BIG thing even before they found the stone, now this game comes and the whole planet is a ship graveyard the Kiiths were fighting for, and thousand years before the discovery of the original ship.

>>320415871
> I will give praise to Gearbox for what they were able to do with HW2's engine and the fact that they completely overhauled its engine and graphics and sound to a modern standard

I won't give them that credit at all. Modders already accomplished 70% of that work. Most of the good things about the remaster only came from the homeworld guys at blackbird having all the original shit on hand.

And giving less than a year on development really shows where the priorities were: Not a faithful recreation of the games with better graphics, but a quick cashgrab on a newly purchased IP.

If they had done the porting with an adaptation of Homeworld 1's engine, instead of Homeworld 2, everything would've gone better.
But they had to use the newer, shittier, engine.

Well, you have to look at Gearbox's line up to see where I'm getting at. You had the Boarderlands game, Duke Nukem, Battleborn along with the Homeworld Remasters which were all competing for production time and resources. Gearbox had to divide their production amongst their games in order to meet production deadlines. Having a game sit in production for +2 years when there are other games that need attention is poor project management and asking for trouble. Think of it this way, is gearbox going to devote more resources to one of its own in house IP's (Boarderlands) or a remaster of a game that's over 20 years old?

No, in the lore from the manuals there was a group of religious fanatics that were REALLY against the Kushans building rocket ships and exploring space.
Taken from the manual:
> mission silumiin riots CIRCA 1024
>Space exploration was notgreeted favorably by the entire population. Large factions from some of the poorer clans believed technology and industrial output was being wasted on this effort. They thought it would be put to better use trying to alter Kharak or at least discover ways to support more people and hold back the encroaching deserts. As final prepa-rations for the first orbital flight were being made,an obscure theologian named Per Doine provided the unifying force for these factions by resurrecting the old myth that tragedy would befall our people should we offend the gods with another act of arrogance. This religious revival spread throughout both polar territories and it culminated with an attempt by a frenzied mob to tear down the Silumiin launch vehicle on the eve of its lift off. This disaster was averted only by the wisdom of the High Technocrats who stood on the launch base defense turrets, preventing them from firing on the crowd, and preached reason to the crowd for the entire 14 hours required for launch. Per Doine slipped through the cordon and prayed for salvation beneath the rocket’s main engines until they ignited, vaporizing him. He died a martyr for the cause.

Homeworld 2 is rock paper scissors, homeworld 1 isn't.

There's a lot of nuance to the homeworld 1 units that homeworld 2 throws away.

For instance: Homeworld 1's missile destroyers frontload their damage, they can put out a lot, but they can't sustain that for very long, and they don't turn very quickly. Which gives you some very interesting ways of using and defeating them.
>>
>>320417123
Do we know the ship in the trailer is Taiidan? The only thing that stands out is that it looks much more advanced than the other units.
>>
>>320413365
so if you play HW1 first you like HW1 more
if you play HW2 first you like HW2 more
this sounds like a textbook case of "they both have different strengths and weaknesses and wherever you enter the series will be where your comfort zone lies"
>>
>>320416932
What makes sense is having some clans other than fucking s'jet and sobaan saving the fucking day. AGAIN.
>>
>>320415124

Man.
I'm honestly not sure if this HW2 hate is new, or if I was just not as immersed in the internet when it originally came out, but I remember nothing but good vibes from HW2. Hell, I loved it to death and I played the first one almost exclusively for the better part of a decade
>>
>>320418220
It's not taiidan, I guarantee it's a kushan ship that got shot down, nobody knows why, they think it's that crazy religious kiith I can't remember the name of, but you have to go salvage shit and find out what happened, then you figure out it was aliens who did it and the whole ball game changes and the satellite that 'accidentally' discovers the khar-toba is no longer an accident.
>>
>>320417858
But I really liked the soundtrack to that game.

I also liked that game.
>>

HW2 was (and is) fucking gorgeous, and remains one of my favourite games ever. I loved the shit out of HW1, and played it with my friend for ages, and going straight from that into HW2 was amazing.
>>
>>320418613
Sorta right.
The HW2 equivalent was boarding something and they were useless because you couldn't go above the limit like in the first one.
>>
>>320418712
Homeworld 2 is basically the CoD of the homeworld series. It had wide appeal, was easy to get into, and also shallow as hell.

Nobody even remembers Cataclysm but it was probably the best of the three homeworld games.
>>
>>320406665
I've never seen heard of this game but it looks really fun. I always thought the Homeworld series was about air battles or something.
>>
>>320418839
>I also liked that game.
So have I, Anon, but devs turned out to be assfucks who torched the franchise with Director's Cut and ran off to make a new studio. They're making some f2p mobashit, last I heard.

But in the soundtrack only the main theme stood out, really.
>>
>>320418712
The HW2 hate is just more visible now that all of the people who liked HW2 have gotten tired of it and forgotten about it leaving only the true long-term HW fans to voice their opinions.
>>
>>320418537
Blame THQ for all of HW2's flaws. THQ made Relic release HW2 because THQ wanted HW2 on the shelves ASAP because of HW1's success. As a result Relic had to cut a ton of content from it with entire game mechanics and factions being cut out.

As for as game trailers go this one is beautiful, the kind you can watch multiple times, great atmosphere, great pacing, just has me so fucking hype, the gameplay looks like it will be fun too.

I long had an idea swimming around in my mind about an RTS game thats like Supcom in gameplay and scale but takes place over a far larger scale than a simple game map restricted to a couple square km's. And it would be slow paced, set in the desert, massive battles would take place over what few resources they can scrounge up, and you would have crawlers that are slow like the UEF crawler from Supcom 1 and 2 but serve as a mobile base that must be protected and defended at all cost.

I'm seeing a lot of similar things from just this trailer alone which has me hyped as fuck.

It's always been there, but Homeworld 2 was a bigger and more popular game than Homeworld 1 was, so the people who didn't like what homeworld 2 did with the story and mechanics have always been drowned out in online discussions.

It's Gearbox, so obviously some trepidation there, but just going from the trailer, it looks and FEELS like Homeworld, and it looks like it plays like Homeworld, which is saying a lot, given the drastically different setting.

At first, they fucked over the Interceptor shooting sounds, but they got those right

Somehow it felt...worse? I think it was because in those cutscenes, you used to have some ambient sounds/chatter in the background, but in the remake, much of that is... gone. Made it feel weird and empty

But nigga you didn't even mention the gameplay and mechanics so suck a dick

HW1 was great, and so was HW2. HW2 was great for different reasons though, and gameplay-wise it was much more simplistic and shallow. The story also took a crazy turn for the worse, on the same level as BSG's season 4.

What HW2 had better though was graphics, UI, and ship designs. HW1 had some GOAT designs, but overall Vaygr designs and the more advanced Hiigaran designs are some of the most iconic scifi ships in existence.

Gameplay wise, Cataclysm was the best, but I doubt anyone here played it since it's hard to get a copy of now. Otherwise people would be bitching about HW2 not being more like Cataclysm instead of like HW1.

>During the next 25 years, the Mothership lowly
took form inside the Scaffold, building up in layers from the center sections outward, until the final layer of ceramic armor was laid just last year. For the last eight decades, more than 10,000 technicians along with another 25,000 robots have worked on this ship continuously. Many of the fusion torches and materials plants that broke down and processed the planetoids early in the construction program were cannibalized and incorporated into the Mothership itself. During the course of this massive project, 2,357 personnel gave their lives for the future of our people, and their names are engraved on the central hyper drive core of the Mothership. Theywill never be forgotten, and their brave spirits will precede this vessel into the gulf of hyperspace.

Depends on the audience.

If you want casuals who don't care about the franchise and will drop it and forget about it after two years, then yes. You want graphics and presentation.

If you're going for the long tail distribution and the money that comes from having an established and respected franchise with games that are held in high regard decades after they've been released, then you want to focus on gameplay and mechanics.

The next step was to construct the orbiting Scaffold
where the Mothership would be built. This
framework took 10 years to complete, and is the
single largest structure ever built. New disciplines in
macro-engineering had to be created and put into
practice just to complete this construction yard. The
Scaffold measures 25.6 kilometers long and is
stationed in middle orbit around our world. Easily
visible from the planet’s surface, it is the only moon
Kharak has ever known and has been a natural fixture
in the night sky for almost four generations. Only
the eldest of our people can remember a time when
the skies were dark and there was no glittering lattice
work to remind our people of their destiny.

If we go to Skirmish and are just presented with some premade maps in a relatively small square I'll be disaapoint.

This is a chance to revolutionize and revitalize the RTS genre, doing away with the standard Skirmish map into something larger and more seamless with the planet itself would be amazing.

It's... different. Still good, the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. Some goofy voice acting and the story is kinda eh at times. Infantry is godmode unless you play the mod that lets you play as the Terran Empire (it also balances the game more evenly).

Some pretty neat alien units to play with, even if it seems kinda odd to not play as the humans if you're into HFY shit like I am.

also
>not liking order of the new dawn

nigga the medium hoverdynes are the best unit in the entire game and they look like dope ass space cadillacs with plasma cannons, couple them with the rape-tastic drone carrier and some templar torpedo infantry and you'll see the opposition just melt away completely

Well, I mean
Part of the reason for that is because, as it turns out, that's exactly the worst way to actually go about that.
We're working on it though.
>>
>>320424194
Makaan's mostly-united Vaygr, using old prototype Taiidan atmospheric-destruction launchers. The same launchers that were later miniaturized and installed on the ships that destroyed Kharak.

1) Shit's expensive as fuck
2) Contrary to popular belief, there's still plenty of planet left here. It's better to take care of what we have now, than fuck up some new planet
3) We ARE going to Mars. The plans are underway and we'll be there within the next 15 years.

I just didn't like Cataclysm, it wasn't what I wanted from a HW game.
What I loved most about homeworld was its story and its aesthetic, and cataclysm's ship designs and overall aesthetic felt like the weakest entries in the series

Gearbox is handling mostly publishing shit, Blackbird Interactive is handling nearly 100% of technical and creative development-- they're made up almost entirely of previous Homeworld devs

that being said anthony burch don't even fucking look at the title of my goddamn game
>>
>>320424851
If that's the case why the hell is there a bunch of ground war shit during the expedition?
Looks like typical Gearbox meddling retcon bullshit to me.
>>
>>320423814
Ground Control 2 and the HW series are my all time favourite RTS's because of their de-emphasizing the parts I hate the most in RTS's: resource gathering and base building

neo-/v/ and the lets-play generation
playing games is a thing of the past, the games themselves are irrelevant.
>>
>>320425074
they are literally publishing a game already developed by an autonomous studio after leasing them the IP for the franchise the idea was birthed from
>>
>>320425121
Gee, I dunno, maybe the literally hundreds to thousands of years of clan warfare BEFORE the Daiamid was founded? The expedition that uncovered the Khar-Toba took place after the clans were already united by the Nabaal and living in peace. This massive warfare shit taking place while they're exploring the Khar-Toba is a bullshit retcon.

They were mining ships, they were supposed to be kind of shoddy looking to add to the atmosphere.

Also he may be referring to that the remaster has worse voice overs, and maybe a couple of other changes I don't know about, I haven't played the remaster.

It's more of a problem of getting it to run properly unless you kept a win98/xp machine around.
>>
>>320425378
maybe they are corperations fighting over salvaging rights to wreaks discovered after the Kar-toba?
We know little about the game so far so we don't have much to go on.
>>
>>320424784
The Beast in Cataclysm was cool though. Cataclysm felt like a Horror-RTS for some reason, I guess its because of how they describe the beast infection in detail.

It got worse when I got to the mission where I have to protect a convoy of civilian ships from beast cruise missiles. thank god for Drone Frigates.
>>
>>320425842
What part of "the expedition to the Khar-Toba happened after the Kiith were already united under the Daiamid" don't you understand?
>>
>>320425000
>war shit during the expedition

The intro for HW1 was somewhat vague on the expedition, there was probably a war going on when they found the wreck of the starship, and when the other kiiths (or kiths?) found out, they probably wanted that technology for themselves.

I guess the main faction or clan were playing as in this homeworld game is gonna be Kiith S'jet.

Hey, at lest ipad is alright, r-right?
Still if you think this reality of modern commercialism is anything to be happy about then i just feel bad for you.
Having no moral backbone or dignity is just the worst.

Then again i am hypocrite, but fuck me if it ever will be my selling point at a date or anything.
>>
>>320425964
I'm implying its not during the expedition. Maybe its after the Kar-Toba expedition and people were starting to uncover more wreaks in the desert. You also have the religious fanatics that don't want the Kushans to return to the stars. They may be attacking expeditions out into the desert to recover wreaks.
>>
>>320421273
I really liked watching the mining ship slowly turn into a weapon of war.
>>
>>320425000
the game was in development in this capacity, announced by blackbird interactive, at least a year before gearbox announced what they were doing with the IP and even longer before gearbox reached out to them to say they could use the IP for their game.

There was ground war shit because the discovery of the guidestone and the subsequent race to leave the barren planet was heavily argued among the kiith; there were rebellions and sabotages, hell on the day of the launch there was a guy who ran under the engines as they were firing up as a final act of protest. Knowing anything about the actual game's story would have answered this for you.

>>320425810
>>320425494
>>320425716
The actual reason is that this was originally a standalone game not directly tied to HW being put together by a handful of Relic expats; they kept their scope small, and designed their game around the sudden resurgence in interest surrounding RTS's that was taking place thanks to a bunch of kickstarted games. At some point, after GB acquired the HW IP and announced what they were doing with it, they wound up being able to put the HW name on it. Keeping the work they did, they refocused and wrote the story to connect it with the canon.

>>320425950
It makes perfect sense, and the idea was really cool, it's purely a personal thing that I wasn't sold on its departure from a more grand, historical/borderline-mythical retelling style to a focused, immediate horror.

>>320426210
>>320425505
I support developers and work that I like. I support the team making this game. I like that they are continuing in the tradition of making games that look uniquely gorgeous and expect them to have made something that plays as intuitively as the HW series did. That's what you call "having no moral backbone or dignity." Your argument seems to be that in order to have dignity I should be more invested in the commercial aspect of the game than the actual game itself. How's that less consumerist?
>>
>>320426210
except, you know, the opposite
because instead of caring about the brand (gearbox | apple)
what matters is who's making it (the original HW team | not fucking children)
nj sinking your argument with your own retarded analogy
