I think there's a place for it, but it'll never supersede consoles/handhelds as the primary market for gaming. Steam, Mobas, MMO's there's things that have been very successful on PC that do provide a lifeblood on it.
Even then I don't think any developers or organizations have set their eyes on PC as the de facto lead for gaming. At the same time, I don't see that group of consumers being marginalized either, thanks to the digital age ensurring it's continued presence as time marches forward.

Exclusives are not cost effective in the AAA industry. It costs millions and millions of dollars to make a AAA game and then they sell for $60 a pop, very cheap for how much money went into its creation.
In order to make a profit they need to reach as many people as possible, so they either get paid heaps of money by Sony/Microsoft to be an exclusive, or they develop for multiple platforms.

People buy AAA titels on just one platform. Sony gets a share of all this game since they are co developing it. They basically sell the big first wave on their platform and cash in on people who want to play it on PC but are willing to wait longer. I think you're underestimating how big the platform is for PC games nowadays. There's over 125 million Steam users, and even if half of them can't run the majority of AAA game that's still a massive audience that have no incentive to purchase a (non-Nintendo) console. PC gaming/Steam has grown massively over the past half decade, so while saying "PC is not in direct competition to consoles" would have been valid in 2009, the argument doesn't hold its ground now.

Why are you people so stupid about this concept? Sony helps fund the game for their platform and allows PC development because they also get money as publisher. They also show good will towards consumers and it doesn't hurt their fanbase, because whoever likes to play on PS4 will play on PS4 and whoever is informed enough to have a good PC will have the choice to play it on PS4 first or wait until the PC version.
Xbox One owners will then have to buy a PS4 or PC, so they are warded off from the direct competitor and may end up buying more from Sony or just stop giving money to MS. It's simple.
