I did this in 2007. Came back last year and loved the game and was a bit bummed that Witcher 2 dumped the combat.

I loved The Witcher 3 and think it's the best of the three but it still didn't feel as atmospheric as 1. What was missing? Can't put my finger on it

the engine used in DAO and TW1 was just fucking great, graphical fidelity doesn't always mean an improvement. the combination of everything that makes the game what it is has to all be taken into account at the same time, the absolute end result of everything looking and sounding the way they do shapes the atmosphere. the atmosphere conveyed by the sounds, music and environment in TW1 simply fits the witcher universe better than what we in my opinion got in the other two games

In W1 you get to small settlements or small parts of a town and you actually meet important people there which you remember.
In W3 literally none except like 5 people are memorable, and those are people you already know from the previous games.

Much more interesting atmosphere than Witcher 2's more "fantastic" and the same time more generic atmosphere. And because the combat is so damn uninvolved it's more entertaining than rolling around in W2.

I think the combination of a smaller world plus game mechanics that felt closer to what a witcher would do added to it. Money was scarce, the alchemy system felt like alchemy, and most people despised you for being a witcher. Compare this to TW3 where money is plentiful, the alchemy system got casualized and most people don't care you are a witcher.
