I consider the Gamecube controller to be heavily flawed, actually. Here is a list:

>bulky shoulder buttons that make Z uncomfortable to reach, since your finger is usually resting on R, and moving your finger from R to Z takes more "efford" than on other controllers due to the "dent" in the R button that your finger is resting in.
This can be avoided if you are resting the index finger on Z and the middle finger on R. However I personally consider that uncomfortable.

I dunno, it definitely isn't the perfect controller but i enjoy it a lot still. I enjoy the C sticks feeling and the d-pad is at least usable, though the controller could definitely do with some more middle buttons and a longer cord. And honestly for a Smash game I don't think you could do better.

I think you can do better for Smash if Y and B were closer together, so that you can jump and on the same frame start a special attack.
I know, pro players can do that, but I am not a pro player, and it is still an unnecessary flaw of the controller.

Actually I used to play the living fuck out of Night fire and it worked fine for me. Actually for a while I couldn't get used to playing fps with an xbox controller. Didn't feel right compared to the gamecube.

Anyway, I think the point that anon was trying to make (or the point I am making now anyway) is that design wise you have to design your game around the gamecube buttons because you won't be able to use all four of them in a quick alternating manner.

Real talk: I love the GC controller but it was far from perfect. The face buttons had great arrangement, the left analogue stick was tight as fuck, and the shoulder triggers were inspired (mostly.) But I'll never ever praise that god awful c-stick, their shitty vestigial d-pad, or their equally vestigial z button.

The world needs a GC controller sequel that does what the 360 controller did to the Xbox controller S.

Nintendo includes the D-pad on every new console they produce. This is because they want to keep the patent for their D-pad technology active. You'll notice that the Xbox controllers have a terrible d-pad and are known for such. Playstation 3's d-pad is actually 4 separate buttons and does not feel as great as sliding your finger across the Nintendo d-pad's button face. As vestigial as the d-pad is on this controller, it was necessary to preserve the patent and maintain Nintendo's dominant and superior d-pad technology.

The triggers are also a matter of opinion and only matter for driving games, but just feel a little cheap.

The whole point of combos on modern controllers is to make performing actions artificially harder in the first place. Seems rather Sisyphean to design a controller around making deliberately obfuscated inputs easier.
