Essentailly the Ice climbers were supposed to be in the game, but the 3ds couldn't handle it so they were cut. Lucina, Dark Pit, and Dr. Mario were already made as costumes for Marth, Pit, and Mario. Since he had extra time he decided to pad out the roster by adjusting their properties. Hence his free desert analogy.

They do separate polls for each gender and in Awakening there really aren't any good male characters other than Chrom. It was basically a toss up between Chrom and Robin, and I'd pick Robin over Chrom to be honest.
