Why did it stop being fun after this point?
>>
>>320303502
Because you got good
>>
>>320303502

I know what you mean. Especially lost izalith was kinda shit.
>>
It didn't.
>>
Because the quality of boss fights go to shit.
>>
>>320303502
because somewhere around that point you realize that everything this game's combat is is just roll-hitroll-hit-roll-hit every time
>>
Because warping.

And then they decided you should be able to do that right away from then on, the stupid cunts.
>>
>>320304379
Lost Izalith was so shit, SO SHIT, they apologized for it's and Demon Ruins existence.

YES.
>>
>>320303502
Honestly it wasn't that fun to begin with, enemies just aren't aggressive enough outside of boss fights, it makes fighting them too safe and predictable and boring.
>>
>>320303502
Something to do with the game being rushed I'm guessing.
The first half of the game feels so much more polished than the second.
I mean, there's a giant hole in Lost Izalith's skybox for instance, right outside Bed of Chaos's fog door. It's super noticeable.
>>
>>320303502

All the Souls games are rushed to hell.

This is the part where the game ran out of time to fully flesh out and polish the areas. The areas that are rushed:

>Lost Izaleth
>Crystal Cave
>Tomb of the Giants
>Demon Ruins
>Firelink Altar
>>
>>320303502
Because then you realize every single boss is the same

>slash attack
>gap closer/escape
>some aoe attack, either stops for a moment and then releases an aoe force or jump into the air and then jumps down to the ground
>>
>>320303502
Do you mean why did gaming as a hobby become less fun after you played Dark Souls?

Well OP, it's probably a combination of getting older, thus being more busy, and higher standards. Such an amazing game will put a damper on your experiences with less well designed games.

You seen the sort of attention and detail games can have so you're likely less satisfied when you notice other games that are clearly flawed in those areas.
>>
There's just no comparing the earlier areas like Anor Londo, the Undead Parish and Undead Burg to the later areas.
There's an incredibly apparent quality difference.
>>
I liked TotG, Demon Ruins, and Dukes. The big lava field portion of Izalith wasn't that great, the but the little city area was good imo.
>>
>>320303502
areas were rushed to shit
>>
>>320305361
>the but the little city area was good imo.
Looked great. But nothing good in it. Should have been a demon madhouse, not just statues and blenders.
>>
>>320305361
>TotG,

So god damn short. You can walk, not engage any of the skeleton beasts and get to the end really quick. Not a bad area, just short.

>Demon Ruins,
> Izalith

Re-used two bosses as enemies. Only has a few new enemies. Mostly fight statues. Re-use Asylum demon for the 3rd time.

>Dukes

Probably the last area they fleshed out. Compare Duke to Crystal cave.

He doesn't know.
>>
Because Anal Rodeo looks and feels like an end game area and not a barely middle of the road area.

Anal Rodeo should have been either longer, or further a long in the game.

I don't care what the "lore" says, Anal Rodeo should have been end game territory.
>>
>you reach Gwynevere
>she gives you the warp thingy
>you warp to where the Gods fucked off to to fuck the real Gwynevere and have immortal sex orgies with other Gods

Would have been a better ending, after all past that point the quality fell massively.
>>
>>320304379

>kinda

No let's just go ahead and say the worst area of the game was shit full stop. Don't sugarcoat it.

Lost Izalith is fucking awful on top of being boring.
>>
>>320303502
it seems like the point they stopped developing the game out of passion and just wanted to get it finished

Duke's Archives was pretty neat but it was obviously rushed. and the rest of the areas ranged from mediocre to shit

Demon's Souls had the same problem but it was only the last few areas of the game instead of the entire second half. being able to play most of the game out of order helped with that I think.
>>
>>320306232
Yeah but if you did that her husband FLAME GOD FLANN would have to fuck you in the ass.
>>
>>320303502
Because by that point you probably have equipment that's good for the rest of the game and don't need to explore cause what's the point, you just kill enemies and lame bosses
>>
>>320306585
Stand perfectly still and straight and have her tell him you're just a dildo shaped like a human?
>>
Because the big areas with pathways that loop into both themselves and other areas took a back seat for more linear levels that just lead to the boss.
>>
>>320303502
They blew their mad midgame, the quality of other bosses takes a nosedive. They are all retarded like bed of chaos or baby eay like nito. They kinda gave up on adjusting the difficulty curve.
>>
>>320303502
Archive was pretty good

Tomb of the giants was a nice change in pace due to it's darkness (if you did not find a propper ligt source)

Lost Izalith was shit and short but had some awesome art design

4 kings was basically just the bossfght I think - but this also was a nice design choice due to the complete darkness in the abyss.

>>
>>320307367
Lost Izalith could've been a good area seeing as how it was basically hell with trees everywhere. But did the contrast have to be so bright? And did we have to do the fire walking thing? And did the dragon butts have to be crammed into the same spot?

But she was married to the Dragon Duke seath or whatever his name was and Priscilla was their kid.
>>
>>320307284
this, the beginning are felt like a huge world with many paths and shortcuts that are connected to all different areas, second half of the game you just follow the main path till you get to the boss at the end
>>
>>320307330
Actually all sign point to being rushed. There is an unfinished Bed of Chaos boss that would be a real fight and not the one we got.

There was also a scrapped boss in New Londo Ruins.
>>
>>320307626
drangleic castle was pretty cool desu senpai
>>
>>320307682

No, Gwynevere left the city over a century ago when it turned to shit. She's married to some flame Lord.

The only Lord still living there is Gwyndolin.

The origin of Priscilla is never explained. Painted World and Priscilla is the first areas and characters made, but they didn't fit into the world properly and were repurposed.

>>
>>320307682
No her ring specifically mentioned that she ran off with her husband Flann. We don't know the circumstances of Priscilla's birth. Only that she's cross bred between a dragon and...something that allows her to threaten even the gods of Anor Londo. Maybe it was Gwynevere. Maybe it was Velka. Maybe it was some unnamed goddess. Or maybe it was none of the above. The game doesn't give us enough to work with. Hell we barely know anything about Velka herself only that she was influential and had something to do with the Dark and sin

>>
>>320308549
don't worry, it's not your fault that you were born a retarded frogposter
>>
Because you realized nothing was going to top O&S
>>
>>320308549

Oh, you didn't know? There's stuff that's easy to miss. I admit I would have never figured it out on my own.

Gwyndolin has created an illusion so that Anor Londo looks better than it is, and uses a Gwynevere illusion to rule the city while he hides out.

The city is actually in the dark and most of the enemies are not real. Only the Silver Knights are real.
>>
>>320307983
>>320308324
And apparently Priscilla was originally supposed to have been the heroine of Dark Souls, so her origin and character are not at all insignificant.
>>
>>320308924

She has the same voice actor as Maiden in Black, and a similar design, so it's likely she was supposed to play the same role. Then that was abandoned. Near the end of the game they stuck Painted World in very awkwardly.
>>
>>320308046
Holy shit i was just about to post something like this. It felt so damn reward to go into that room and just stare at em while kneeling down and recieving praise.
>>
>>320303502
Shamefully until this week I had never beaten Dark Souls. I fucked up my build the first time and got frustrated in Anor Londo. I don't think I even got to S&O. This week I started again, didn't act retarded and steamrolled through the game. Only boss that caused me any trouble was S&O who took about 10 tries, everyone else was under 3.

Everything after S&O was ridiculously easy too. I had much more trouble on the trash than the actual bosses. Especially Seathe, those clams fucked my shit in but he was a piece of cake.

I heard 4 kings was supposed to be difficult but I didn't take damage or even struggle on that one. I stumbled around in the dark and pressed R2 on some demons. Did that fight glitch?
>>
>>320308916
Also all the gods of Anor Londo left. Like literally all of them sans Gwyndolin. Which is messed up because Gwyn gave them all shards of his soul and gave standing orders on moving the humans to the asylums. And as soon as he disappears all the gods just abandoned ship. Including Gwynevere.
>>
>>320309326
>Which is messed up because Gwyn gave them all shards of his soul and gave standing orders on moving the humans to the asylums.

>>
>>320309279
The main game has nothing to threaten you with once you beat OnS. There's the DLC with 3 bosses you can try. Have fun with Kalameet and Manus
>>
>>320308443
Underrated post

Dark Souls became boring after you got gud, by the time you beat O&S not only does the level design falter but you have already mastered the game well enough to not get your shit wrecked ever again.
>>
>>320309592

Kaathe dialogue stating he had the humans shepherded out of fear of a future Dark Lord. Whether he created the prophecy is up for debate.
>>
>>320309702
Kalameet is fucking f u n

>>320309897
Her illusion is. Realistically she's probably the same size as Gwyndolin and Gwyn. They're about 3m tall.
>>
>>320310075
Eh up for debate. Size is inconsistent in this game and has more to do with power than anything else. If you look at Gwyn's tomb it's gigantic.

>>320303502

Smough and Ornstein are arguably the most difficult bosses, or at any rate, you're not going to hit anything harder after that, so you've pretty much gotten past anything the game can throw at you challenge-wise. And yeah, the design choices weren't as well done in the second half of the game.

>>320307330

I liked Bed of Chaos. It's not even really a bossfight, just kind of a weird minigame.
>>
>>320309693
To triple the disappointment, at that point you start getting wild high-stat fantasy weapons and armor that can be a crutch for whatever bad habits you have left. You can just plow through the enemy corridors the rest of the game without a single care. Dark Souls is one of the few games I've dropped just because of how big the quality dip is; that hurts more than a consistently mediocre-to-okay game. Talk to Queen Titties, do some painting, then go to Artorias land and you've seen all the game really has to offer.
>>
>People posting dumb shit about it being the player's fault
Second half of the game got rushed, it's as simple as that. There's a fuckton unfinished shit in DS1.
>>
>>320311376
One of Chester's dialogues is "for Juniper's sake put some spring in your step!" Apparently Juniper is a permutation of Guinevere or in this case Gwynevere. Leading to the idea that maybe she's still alive in Chester's time under a new name.

>Interesting, but what makes you say that? Been a long while since I've cared about DaS lore.

When you have the Wolf Ring and talk to Astoria's girlfriend, she says that Chester stole it. Working backwards, you can infer that the corpse you got it from is the present is Chester's corpse.

I don't get where this idea came from. Nothing says he's from the future relative to the player. Yes, he's wearing a top hat and belts rather than ye olde clothes but the clothing in Dark Souls isn't incredibly consistent anyway. I mean, it looks fucking fabulous and its far better medieval stuff than what most nips are capable of, but its not consistent enough for Chester's top hat to be evidence enough of even more time travel.

If that's true, then it's not nearly as obvious because the game is still really good the whole way through. I replayed through it recently and it seemed pretty complete to me and on top of that, it was the first Souls game and is pretty old. My only complaint is the FPS, which seemed a lot more apparent.

I feel like there can be a middle ground. Oscar can't be your friend and rival because they removed anything that would make that possible. Ciaran's dialogue might have gotten cut, but it still makes sense because the body and ring are still kept in the game.

Because it was cut, I do have to wonder... Does that mean Ciaran perhaps just chooses not to tell you? Or is it maybe that it really isn't true? I'd say you could claim both are just as likely.

it's interesting how they reuse skeletons for animations in a non-annoying way.

From Dark Souls to Dark Souls 2 they clearly reused the Blighttown troll model and made it into those enemies with sickles in Dark Souls 2. Very few changes made as far as appearance.

In Bloodborne it looks like they reused the skeleton dogs from Tomb of the Giants and made them into the werewolf things.

The gatekeeper guys around the Cathedral Ward remind me of the giants from DS2 but I don't know why.
>>
>>320316692
I don't think there's any need to go back and elaborate on Dark Souls 1 characters. Yeah, Velka is interesting, but her time is over, and Flann is so minor there's literally no point in touching that. I mean, I'd love continuations of themes, references to and answers to questions left unanswered by DaS1, but nothing as explicit as a Velka temple or something.

Honestly, I just want a happy ending. This poor world has suffered enough.

Tomb of the Giants > New Londo Ruins > Duke's Archives > Crystal Cave > Lost Izalith > Demon Ruins

Seeing as you can complete literally all of The Catacombs before getting the Lordvessel I don't know if it should count. If it does though it's top of the list, before The Catacombs.

Something to let me do a proper guts build, that really feels like the whirlwind of death he is. An ultra great sword with a fast moveset, or an armor set that speeds them up, or something.

Also, related, but much more minor, I wouldn't mind some proper gore effects, or something to make killing enemies feel less like smacking down ragdolls. Still a very minor thing though

Lots of verticality. Dark Souls world design was excellent (most of it, anyway). The whole thing was on the side of a mountain, so you're spending a lot of time scurrying on top of walls and cross bridges and narrow ledges. You get such a wonderful sense of vertigo when you look up from early game areas and see Anor Londo seemingly miles above you, but when you get to the area where you first meet Solaire you realise you're already far up above the rest of the world. Really felt like I was scaling Olympus.

DaS2 had some very pretty areas and obviously there were some good, vertigo inducing areas but the world felt a lot more flat.

Luckily from what we've seen of DaS3 (the high wall of Lorric or whatever its called) we're seeing a return to verticality.

I would love some real fleshed out city areas though. Stuff on the same level as the streets of Yharnam. You never really experience Anor Londo, Oolacile Township has collapsed into the Abyss, and you only see a single street in Undeadburg.
>>
>>320303502

>>
>>320314557
ouch...
>>
>>320320312
Oh, and a nice forest area. Royal Woods and a lot of Darkroot Garden were pretty boring - just flat with trees scattered about. Some of the forestry areas in DaS2 were better but not by a great amount. I want something pretty with lots of ledges and gulleys, like the Forbidden Woods.
>>
>>320319664

Duke archives was a finished level.

Crystal caves were not finished.
>>
>>320304674
I can't imagine trying to finish the game without warping.
I think its fine you get it near the end of the game. Its just lame when you get it at the start.

But it makes getting all the stuff you missed and buffing your shit up so much simpler.

Besides DaS1 was the only game that didn't have teleportation the whole game. Demon's Souls had it due to its structure, Dark Souls 2 had it, and its level set up was similar to Demon's Souls (Start in a hub area then follow a path until you reach the end, it just multiple different areas instead of a single long dungeon for each path

Bloodborne was the closest to Dark Souls in level progression design, but it was still also generally linear, just with areas branching off to the side here and there.

this. DS1 felt like it was inspired by norse cosmology and Yggdrasil with its verticality. At the top you had Anor Londo, the city of the gods, accessed by a bridge guarded by a great watcher (Iron Golem). The Burgs were the human cities, half way up and far below you had the demonic realm of fire (Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith) and the land of the dead (Tomb of Giants). All of this was connected by the arch trees, and at the very base of the world we had a hidden dragon.

There was a lot of thought put into Dark Souls world design and it goes a long way to sell the atmosphere of the game. In 2, you can see a lot of distant zones in the background (from Majula you can see Forest of Giants, Heide's Tower of Flame and Drangleic castle), but it doesn't feel the same

No game is "finished" if you're using that logic. Every single major release has content that's cut or unfinished. Some of it ends up as junk data on the disc.
MGS5 and Xenogears are unfinished. DeS is a complete game.

dukes was alright, but it suffered a little from enemy repetition. Crystal hollows were basically burg hollows but with beefed up stats, channellors and snake men were re-used as well, crystal golems and the moonlight butterflies had already been encountered in darkroot. So the only new enemies were the octopi head snakemen and the clams

overall it was probably the strongest of the post lordvessel levels after the tomb of the giants

Anor Londo was the high point, literally and figuratively (though I guess the Duke's Archives are technically on higher ground). The place most untouched by the dying flame. The last, smoldering cinder of a ending age. And you trudged through refuse, feces and insurmountable odds to reach it. Everything else has been laid low, ashes. Desolation. This point is especially hammered home when you reach the Kiln of the First Flame. I remember the tinge of sadness I felt opening that door. I felt so hollow after beating Gwyn. It was just so saddening. No comfort. The friends you made along the way are likely dead, hollow, or on their way to one those. Even if you manage to prevent all of their deaths/hollowing, the outcome is the same.
Who am I fooling, everyone here is talking purely about the gameplay. I think it was still fun and I still find it tons of fun to replay. But everything after Anor Londo is just kind of depressing.
>>
>>320324715
It's true. Getting to Anor Londo and progressing through it really feels like a reward for getting through everything before it, but the content after that not so much. It's kind of neat aside from the fact that it makes repeat playthroughs a bit of a slog in the last act.

There's a pillar/stalagmite in Gwyn's arena near the western wall that's thick enough to bug out his pathfinding.
Lure him to the wall and play peekaboo around that pillar. ie. walk left and right (always keep him opposite you) while blocking with a high fire-resist shield. When you're directly opposite eachother in melee range it triggers him to either kick or use a combo attack; the kick will miss outright and you can simply back off to avoid chip damage from his sword until he's finished flailing about. Once his combo's nearly finished move back in, punch him 1-2 times, lather, rinse, repeat.

I beat him at SL1 in NG+ that way.
He instagibs you if you fuck up though.

or he can just learn how to parry him and beat him even on ng7 with a finger up his ass

when you're close to him he only has 2 attacks, quick one and slower one.

When he does the slower one you just parry him normally, when he does quick he's gonna go for 3 or 4 hit combo so you block the first one and only parry the second one

Roll when he grabs or kicks

Pinwheel didn't do shit to Nito. He stole the Rite of Kindling, yeah, but what the fuck was Nito going to do with bonfires anyway?

Nito weakened himself by sacrificing so much of his power to death, according to the soul description. Kind of spooky - even Nito, one of the most powerful beings in the world and pretty much a death god, still worships and makes offering to the concept of death itself.
>>
>>320325197

>>320327095
Now it's been quite a long time since I've dusted off my lore, but I'm quite sure it's stated either in game or official material that Pinwheel stole the power of the Gravelord aka Nito. I'm quite sure it's not referring to the Rite of Kindling, which is something that's implied to be practiced outside of the tomb. It's more likely Pinwheel picked it off a cleric, or was originally a cleric himself.

Na, clerics go into the Catacombs specifically for the Rite of Kindling. Petrus tells you. According to the Rite all clerics can do it, and all Undead can imitate it, but presumably even for a cleric the Rite boosts the ability.

Seeing as Pinwheel drops nothing of significance other than the Rite, in all likelihood that's what he stole. It could of course be Nito's power over death, but I think to do that he would have had to somehow steal part of Nito's soul* and Pinwheel doesn't have a soul drop. And again, even if he did, Nito's soul specifically says most of his power went to death, so whatever Pinwheel stole couldn't have been that significant.

*Of course, the aim of the Occult Rebellion was also to steal Nito's power so maybe there is some other way of doing it, or maybe Pinwheel was involved with that in somewl way.

I'm not even one of those git gud autists but Gaping is the epitome of a boss that looks intimidating but ends up a pushover, he fights like a boss from some 90's game with his stupid charge attack leaving him wide open and the rest of the time he does fuckall if you stay far away enough

I remember he kept kicking my ass the first time I fought him because there was apparently a rare version of the flying attack he does where he will actually fly over you then land. He normally just does it if you are attacking him from range but he kept doing it to me in melee range which basically gave me no chance to escape so I kept getting instakilled that way.

Without that ai quirk, yeah hes piss easy.

>>320330881 here. I actually recall this happening to me now.
Also it wasn't for the longest time that I ever saw him do that corrosive puke move, so I'm thinking he got a major AI overhaul at some point after release.

The gimmick of the Crystal Cave was underused. There should have been a portion that required the player to really concentrate on the ground.

Tomb of the Giants should have been more complex. Seeing how the lantern tells you where to go anyway, they should have offered more off-path areas for the player to get lost in, with rewards, and perhaps an added encounter by a difficult unique enemy.

The entirety of Lost Izalith was just completely unfinished. Such a waste.

Drained New Londo Ruins needed more pathways, and more buildings to explore.

Overall, the end of the game was simply unfinished.

New Londo>Archives>Catacombs>Lost Izalith

The Four Kings are my favorite boss in the series.

They're beautiful, but horrifying. A cautionary tale against the Dark, and what happens to those consumed by a hunger for humanity.

All of New Londo has been building up to this fight. You drop into pure darkness, and these fallen kings come from the dark, twisted by hunger and the abyss.

No no. We're not talking about a few scraps of cut content. Most of the time, stuff gets cut in order to make the game feel more polished. As certain assets stopped having a purpose, they were removed. But that's not the case with DeS. The game was meant to have at LEAST 5 more levels. There was an entire world that was cut. they had every intention of including this world. And they just didn't have the time, because they were rushed. They had a map made, enemies, and animations.

DeS is an unfinished game.

I value exploration more. And new Londo Ruins was far too simple. You just walk in a circle. And then you drop in a hole. The boss is pretty cool.

You could just skip the Archives with a timed roll. Having to die against Seath really goes against the spirit of the game.
