it doesn't work like this there is a bunch of stuff there as much as anywhere else there is just a lot of intergalactic dust which conceals the space objects. notice the how red the stuff on the edges is. thats again because of the dust. the dust absorbs the hight freq./low wavelengths and leaves only the low freq./high wavelenghts which is the red colour.
