I'll be honest and say that my first impression was that he looked like a fuck-hueg Wesley Snipes. Honestly, they look vaguely similar - maybe the forehead, Snipes has kind of a rectangular forehead too. Really though, it's probably more the glasses than anything. The more I look at him now, the less I see it - noses are completely different, etc.

Apparently half the game was mistranslated and we only got half the story. They figured anyone who wasn't Japanese wouldn't understand the story so they made it dumbed down. But all that did was make the story confusing and it felt incomplete.

Yeah the story is a mess at times, that's true, but I wonder if FFVII would have been as big a hit if it had a more literal one that spelled it out, with less entertaining characters.
Like when I think back on FFVII and as I've been replaying it over the past week or so, I remember having a really good time because it was ridiculous and funny as fuck, and very much a product of the 90s. Like the typos and grammatical errors are funny, whatever, but everything else was too. Then they'd hit you with some spoopy horror shit that was pretty damn well done, and some emotional beats that worked pretty well, too.
Like, VII isn't anywhere near my favourite FF game but I think the strongest things about it all sat on the cast and and all their shit. And a lot of that stuff was changed from the Japanese ver, from what I can tell.
