Not in theme park MMOs. There's always limited content.
In other words, making professions a playstyle is gameplay; but it's still unnecessary for getting entertainment from the idea. With impermanent loot comes the potential for neat affixes.. and marketing that has nothing to do with actually getting the gear, just flipping it in sales. Having a profession is fun, though, and with more gear flowing through the economy comes more gem sales and whatever else.
