PC didn't really start spearheading progress in gaming technology until maybe 8 or so years ago. Before that, consoles lead the way while PC lagged behind.
That's one of the big things that make me say that consoles are a relic that serve no benefit to anybody other than the console hardware developers. The days where the pushing of the boundaries happen on consoles are over. Nowadays, they're just subpar PCs. It'd be better for both consumers and game devs if they died out.
On a related note, these cheap "retro" indie platformers really need to end.

No. Console games generally looked far better than PC games prior to the mid-2000s. All of the big leaps and bounds in graphics technology happened on consoles. Even the last gen was a great deal for the price when it first came out.
Find me a 2001 PC game that looks as nice as FFX.
