I've played 42 hours so far. I haven't made it to either goodneighbor or diamond city yet. In fact, I purposely avoided them. Scavving around and exploring is a lot of fun, as I haven't played a lot of Bethesda games in the past.

It's better than F3 and NV. All 3 games have garbage uninteresting stories and although NV had some interesting side quests, the overall package is just not interesting. It's always been about fucking around in the open world and this game does that well.
The gameplay is so much smoother and your character doesn't feel like a barely functioning piece of shit anymore. A lot of people complained that the shooting in F3 and NV was garbage, and it was. Now that they've actually made something not shit people are saying it's too much like a shooter, you can't satisfy everyone.
But yeah, it's fun. Solid 7/10.

If it was something like a Fallout "spinoff", it would be a solid 7/10 or maybe a weak 8/10.
But as the forth main game of the Fallout franchise...its a 4/10 at best (its not even an RPG anymore, you cant play anything other that the MC bethesda made for you and the character sucks, the story is so weak and the world is so little inmersive I just cant play more than 2 hours straight, the quests are so boring that I litteraly reinstalled New Vegas without even encounter Valentine in the main quest, etc...)
I wont forgive Bethesda for what they did to Fallout, they transformed a good series in Skyrim with guns

I'm mostly miserable with it. I think the mechanics, at least with combat (maybe only the combat) are way improved from 3 but I can't be assed to care about or play any of it. There's something missing, a creative spark or whatever.

Its like they looked at NV and liked the decision making and moral ambiguity and applied it, not as well because player choice is still limited within those factions, but at least they tried.

Something feels likes its missing about it and I'm not sure what it is. Like it just feels so lack luster to play. I'll admit I had fun the first 8 hours discovering shit and figuring the game out but then I just hit a brick wall and couldn't bring myself to keep playing. I'm not saying its a bad game, it just doesn't bring me into it enough to want to continue playing. I've only sank like 35 hours into it as well which is nothing compared to the amount I've put into all the previous titles.

Bethesda are still awful writers. Their attempt at introducing ambiguity and choice is even worse than their straight line plot of 3. The faction's conflicts with each other feel contrived as hell and too much of the plot depends on the player caring about stuff that feels optional or stupid. If you don't go out of your way to volunteer for a faction you miss loads of content and the main story is boring by Bethesda standards.

Its honestly a really fun game. Not at 10/10 fallout game. But a good 8-9/10 comfy game oddly enough. I can go back to it and expect a pretty good time and enjoy it. No, its not what we expected as a fallout game, but i find it better then alot of games and its pretty good.
If you have low standards, aren't approaching it very critically, or this is your first Fallout game..you will likely at least enjoy, maybe love it.
Otherwise, aside from the small pluses in graphics and some gameplay tweaks, it's mediocre and a huge disappointment after all this time.
Only brand fanaticism and marketing bring the 9s or 10s. You might actually have shit toaste to think this was great, as it was very much just shit out.

The majority of these games are the side quests and you can easily miss the large bulk of it just playing the main quest and not going out of your way to find stuff. But going out of your way to find stuff is part of the fun for a lot of people.

It's fun for the first I'd say 10 hours? Then you realize how flat it is, how your character is practically set in stone, and theres nothing left to carry it.
The game comes out of the gate strong but its endurance is shit tier.
It's a she too because some of the attention to detail is great. Like when firing a revolver you can actually see the bullets have been hammered.

Because when you got to a place there were things to do or an interesting mini side-story. 4 killed that so they could send you to these places as part of their "INFINITE RADIANT QUESTS" so you could pick up a doodad or kill some raiders instead.
