So Rin being saved was never a possibility, he probably had a backup plan in case Rin didn't ask Kakashi to chidori her chest and he managed to bring her to Minato or Jiraiya.
Madara was counting on Obito becoming yet another Uchiha Care Bear that went Hate Bear due intense trauma.

Man, I remember when UNS3 had the balls to include Minato and Kushina being impalled the exact same way it happened in the Anime and Manga.
Then comes Revolution and:

It doesn't make sense, Kishimoto just made it that way to make a reference to something Naruto said several arcs before (training to know his Chakra nature), one of the many things he said to justify his lust over Sasuke.

It has something to do with the whole lore of black flames. I don't know where it originally came from but in not just Naruto, black flames burns anything and everything even normal fire and it doesn't stop no matter what until whatever it's burning has disintegrated. You should check out 666 Satan/Opart Hunter manga by Kishimoto younger brother that has a character that uses black flames. It's basically early Naruto cross with early Dragon Ball.
