It wasn't that rushed or felt that low on ideas from a story or world perspective. The gameplay was rushed though, but keep in mind that originally the Joyful was meant to be a free 10 minute cutscene that ties up the story but Dingaling turned it into a 4 hour game just because he liked his fans so much.
if anything, comparing the joyful to the painful was interesting because you can obviously see more rookie dev mistakes in the painful versus polish in more areas of the joyful.

I played the game. It's pretty clearly inspired by Earthbound, although I'll admit it's hard to pin down how. Toby Fox was active on Earthbound fan forums and made an Earthbound ROM hack, you know.
