Still is. It took me 138 hours to play through the 3DS version, though I'd never played the PSX version before and generally took my time and di some optional stuff. Looking at the guide on dq-hq, about the only thing I didn't mess with aside from the contests (just long enough to gain access to that one shop) are the optional dungeons. I've read on Japanese sites that the main story can be finished in 50-60 hours, not doing optional content, so maybe if you know what you're doing and you rush it'll go significantly faster.

Haven't played the PS2 version of the game, but from what I've read of it, the 3DS version's quite nice, graphics and some censorship aside.
If they sell badly it will be due to lack of marketing. DQ9 proved the series will sell great in the west when someone actually SELLS it.

In the base game the main story was 80-100 hours if you knew what you were doing somewhat, so 100+ hours counting side stuff with no guide on the new one seems reasonable.
The biggest problem with 7 originally was the class system. It was a huge grind and a lot of classes were flat out terrible or dead ends. Instead of being based on EXP the class levels were based on number of battles fought. And if you switched classes you had to fight a certain number of battles before they started counting for your new class too.
How's it work in the 3DS version exactly?

I'm not exactly sure of the specifics of the job system, I just assumed you got job points for them like in DQ VI. I'm pretty sure that the fighting a certain number of battles before they started counting was scrapped, when I changed to some base classes they'd level up pretty fast (in fact the first time I chose classes everyone's job leveled up once or twice before I'd even made my way back to the time warp). I don't know if it did it in the PSX version, but when going through the jobs at Dharma Shrine you're told how long it'll take to level up. Fast, kinda fast, average, slow, etc.
I didn't use all of the jobs, so I don't know if some were terrible or not. What I used was fine. I used Warrior, Mage, Priest, Sailor, Battle Master, Paladin (a great one for healing and Vacuum Wave), Sage, Pirate and and I think that’s it. Came pretty close to unlocking Godhand for a few characters I think, but never did.
I've heard about hybrid skills. They're not in the 3DS version. Well, the skills themselves are, but you just learn them like anything else. When changing jobs you keep some skills, but lose the higher level skills.

VII's good, though I wouldn't recommend starting with it. I started with the first (SFC version) and went from there. I had fun. Otherwise I'd suggest III, IV, or V. VIII's a great starting point too, but wait for the 3DS version.
Recommended versions (from a person who's only played on each so far, so take my word with a grain of salt you wish):
I - III: SFC
IV: PSX if you can into Nip. Otherwise, the NES version if you really, really don't want to deal with the accents, the DS version if you can.
V: PS2 version if you don't care about Debora, DS if you do.
VI: DS
VII-VIII: 3DS

I used to hate Akira Toryama's artstyle before I got into DQ. It's actually really different feel, I mean, Dragon Ball Z its all blocky an everything seem so geometrical and stoic, from the character eyes to their ridiculous musculature.
In Dragon Quest everything is round, modest and I get the feel that Toryama's wordbuilding and clothing/inventory design also suits the fantasy setting much more than the sci-fi one.
