This isn't true. 60's and 70's Japan were like much of the west, and so was 80's Japan. This is easy to determine by musical styles and fashion of the eras. 90's is when Japan stopped following the west to such a vast degree, but everything prior to that wasn't far off.

It was one of the most accessible eras for murrica both culturally and economically.
Japan finally found a partner in the west that it could really connect to without feeling awkward about it. The yuros always had to put their culture before everything. The south americans were still in the stone age. The US let you do your thing as long as it was awesome.
