Play the trial, see if you enjoy what's there. It won't really let you get an idea of higher level combat where you have way more abilities, but you'll get a decent idea of the playstyle.

NIN is pretty much a support DPS, they don't do higher than DRG/MNK but you take them for what they bring to the party (vulnerability up, Goad).
SCH and WAR are god tier because they are required for raids and are currently the strongest in their respective roles.

AST cards do not help with speed clears at all.
In dungeons Bane and Holy/Aero 3 will outdo AST's "damage buffs" and Gravity by a longshot.
They're random, which makes them further useless.
In raids their damage cards barely make a difference and whatever dps increase it brings is overshadowed by SCH dps.

i agree, a lot of FCs are ran by drama queens. I had to make my own to have the features i want without babies making ridiculous demands and whining.
my only problem is that i now realized running an FC in this mmo is like a one man circus act. 100 members and none of them want to really contribute. The game supports people being anti social so you have no one talking ever it feels.
Also noticed a lot of shitters play this game, they get all upset over wiping once or some other petty thing that pretty much is guaranteed to be a part of playing this game.

Same with second to last phase tether+leap+rage+offscreen charger combo attack, a magic dps -will- die if they get tether and don't have adlo on them, it does around 13.5K damage including the leap's aoe damage even if it is at the lowest it can possibly be by the person being in the far corner, an i209 magic dps using food has around 14.2-14.5K HP and there's simply no time to top people off between phase switches because of how fast phases move near the end. And I'm only using Thordan as an example because anyone that would think AST/WHM is viable is either way too casual to have ever cleared a3s or are cutting edge top end raid groups where comp doesn't matter because everyone in the group is pulling 1.5-2K+ DPS, including the OT.

The heel/sword combo can be handled with just Bulwark if your healer pre-casts Cure 2/Emergency Tactics Adlo/Benefic 2, but it still requires SuperVirus/Disable for it to work.
Anyone dies to the tether charge if they can't move far away enough and since people do assigned positions then yes Deployment tactics is pretty much required.

auras are pretty important, though my group does fine without MP regen, I'm SCH main and other is WHM, we've learned to compensate for lack of regen and usually don't ooM except on a2s final phase sometimes due to wave8 aoeing. BRD has good burst if you play it right but most people don't. Most people don't play a lot of classes right, really, but it's less noticeable on some than others, you can still do good damage on DRG even if you are a shitter at rotations, unless you are eating floor 24/7, same with NIN and MNK.
