I just don't understand fangames in general. Especially ones that look half decent like this one. All they'd have to do is change the name, change some character designs, change some music, change the ui. bam. "Inspired by earthbound" game that would sell buttloads on steam.

True but no Mother 4 exists by Nintendo therefore they have no way of going after this. If Nintendo WAS in any stage of development on Mother 4 including just conceptual talks then they could C&D this but all the fan game devs would have to do is change the name and they are fine

well Ness/Paula/Jeff correspond to Ninten/Ana/Loid from Mother pretty directly. Mother only has a three character party, but there is a temporary "fourth" character named Teddy who is similar to the fourth guy in Mother 4 that I'm not gonna scroll up to look up his name. There's also Pippi who is more like a Picky style character who you get very briefly.
Mother 3 has Lucas as a Ness analogue, and Kumatora as a sorta Paula analogue. Duster is a thief who has no PSI but also tools that have a passing resemblance to Jeff's technology stuff. But the fourth character is Boney, a dog, who gets Jeff's Spy command but nothing else.

because fangames usually don't name themselves in the same manner as a direct sequel would. You don't see fans making/publicizing Mega Man 11 or Warcraft 4. Usually they get names that help indicate its a fangame.

Boney, to compensate having no real special, is really fast and the best character for using items. His regular attack is also pretty decent, so he's more of a backup fighter for Lucas + Kuma doing damage/shields and Duster using buffs/debuffs.

It's twofold. For one, it undermines the creators intention. Itoi stated he finished the series with no intention to continue it, and didn't want anyone else to do so in his place. Mother 4 is being advertised as THE sequel to Mother 3, completely ignoring the original creators vision and intention.
Second, Mother 4 has some serious talent and design behind it. It would be great if it were advertised as its own thing rather than a fan continuation of a series that wasn't supposed to be continued in the first place.

It's kind of messed up how quick the community was to back the project. It grants the project a lot more legitimacy and means that if anyone else were to try to make a Mother 4 they'd be admonished for it.
Considering the long and probably terrible development behind the scenes, the Mother 4 team essentially called "dibs" right after the Mother 3 translation came out and the community said okay. Doesn't sit right tbhfam

I mean you gotta remember that the original version of Mother 4 was a crappy RPGMaker game starring the author's self-insert with the same name even. The community was energized with the release of the fan translation, and the game blew up. The original creators dragged out development, teasing stuff, but eventually bailed on the project. The new devs are certainly trying to make something great out of the concept, but I'm still irritated with the community.
