CSGO was almost dead and shunned by the competitive scene, it was considered a step backwards. However, Valve introduced RNG crates with skins. Also, Since CS has a large reputation for being an "esport", youth flocked to this game wanted to be the biggest MLG star wielding a $500 skin as he head shots noobs.
Skins add a trading scene. Then add a competitive scene and what you get is betting. The game went wrong by not being 1.6, it went wrong by making itself more accessible to the casual market and adding ADHD-tier visuals

Veterans praised the game as the game Source should had been for a long time. Not my quote nor OPINION but high class, competitive players told the public it was more like 1.6 than Source.

I never was much o a CS player but it is my opinion that Valve is trying to create new content for the game, weapons namely to push out more skins.
Not sure if Event started at CS:GO or Dota and later were incorporated to tf2.

It got popular, and I'm not saying that would necessarily be a bad thing but the only thing that really drew knew people to the game were the skins and case opening bullshit, know there are mostly kids and dudebros playing the game just because there are fruity skins. Also issue with a lot of new players is that none of them have played previous CS games and with that the way the game was played has ultimately changed, it's not CS anymore it's basically CoD with slower gameplay and gambling in the mix.
