This did something new an interesting with the characters that you couldn't possibly have guessed going in.

Silent hill wasn't bad. It took a lot of idea from the games and implemented them well. I think it's probably the most similar in terms of visuals and atmosphere.

On its own merits, I thought it was pretty good. The setting evoked a gritty version of the Mushroom Kingdom and gave an explanation to the bros' jumping and fireball abilities. The story was a little nonsensical, which is fair for the subject matter, and the dinosaur transformations were awful but I think it worked great as far as taking a product and spinning it on its head goes. It reminds me a lot of DmC, which could have also been a decent reimagining if the combat wasn't stripped to all hell.
What really gets me is the making of behind this movie. I feel pretty bad for anyone who had to work on it and acted in it.

To be fair nothing related to Mario outside of video games can ever be good... Ever seen the Mario cartoon? There is no logical way to put him in any other media other than video games because everything about him has been designed around video games and their technology.
