I actually kind of agree. In my head it worked as more of a tech demo for the Fox Engine doing horror than indicative of the final project that silent Hills would've been.

Make it about the town as a storytelling device rather than make the story around the town. It's hard to explain but I'll never forget how the first game slowly drove you insane, starting with the dark passageway and getting a mandatory game over and a cop giving you a fucking gun and ending with a fight with either God or the Devil.

If I were to play SH 2-4 on PC, would an Xbox360 controller work or do I need to use some software to trick it into thinking it's a PS2 controller or a PC gamepad released a decade ago or something like that?

PT itself was a great thing, and it should have ended there. By the time they were about to can it, every announcement was "AND THEN THIS COOL GUY IS COMING TO WORK ON IT TOO" and that is unrealistic and bloated. They sounded more like fans throwing every wacky idea in without knowing how to make a game dev team really work.

I felt like SH3 would have been the best had it not clearly rehashed areas from SH2, but instead revisited areas from the first game, since it had more to do with Harry's journey there as oppose to southern Silent Hill. I also would have liked to explore the town again, since it felt like it was too linear.

Barring post-4, then 4. It's not shit but I just don't like it as much as the first 3.

Harry was my favorite protagonist just because I loved the looking for your daughter everyman angle. As for antagonist it's hard to say, but I suppose Dahlia was pretty cool in a goofy, crazy, ridiculously evil way.

I'd fix Silent Hill by going back in time and retiring the franchise after 4.
>>
>>319930718
I think it would be a bit too overaching of a story to fit the Silent Hill universe. Not that the concept isn't interesting, but the town kinda only works because Alessa is behind everything. Maybe a prequel talking about her story? That could work.

The nuances of the cult are lost on some people, especially with the religious doctrines and lore they've got to take in. SH2's disconnection from the cult makes it easy for people to pick up and play while playing connect the dots with the monsters and James's psyche.

SH2 really, is great for the story and characters, but as a game, it's pretty weak compared to SH1 and 3 which offered a greater challenge and more spooks by comparison.
>>
>>319930901
It's a good argument because horror relies too heavily on being every other horror work. It relies on you not having seen things many times while showing you the same things many times, it's one of the most flawed genres of any entertainment mode. The more you see it, the less it works.

Saying "It's not a good argument" isn't a good argument, however.
>>
>>319930962
I don't think Alessa is needed for Silent Hill to function. All you have to do is the right kind of ritual.
>>
>>319930718

They really didn't. The setting itself had parts that were unique to it, but not enough for your half-statements to support with evidence.

I had an idea for a open world Silent Hill game where the government-through a certain amount of experiments and rituals are able to spread the essence of Silent Hill country/worldwide to build a Utopia through it. I think that series needs some fresh ideas and fresh invironment, but taking into the account that everything is changeable according to prontagonist/antagonist fucked up mind I don't think that having silent hill as a setting would be bad, but we can't have everything happening in the hospital/school all over again, show some new places and expand silent hill itself to be more open. What I am sure is that you need Japanese developers to be at the core of the game so we won't get another western "holywood" spooky shit instead of horrifying and kind of unsettling/disgusting atmosphere of Japanese horror, but I think that you will need to work with some western developers to bring a fresh air to series, maybe even work with some slavs, their games usually have a dark and depressing atmosphere anyway.
>>319927978
I don't really get you, it was a tech demo showcasing what can be done and which fresh ideas can be incorporated into (radio, increased interactivity with the world), if you are talking about how people always overhype something and when they get it it doesn't match their retarded high and specific expectation well there is not much to talk about then. >> bonus round: how would you fix Silent Hill
Less monsters, but more mind fuckery. Creating situations where the player would expect a jump scare or monster only to find out there is none there. Of course, the game would know which playthrough the player is on, so the part where they expected something, but nothing was there will have a monster show up. Keep things fresh that way. Give weapons(unbreakable melee weapons), but ammo would be scares and fighting monsters would be largely pointless as you can't kill them just incapacitate them for a while.

i didn't play SM, but i think that's what i was shooting for. i like having snippets about other people's renditions of Silent Hill, but i don't see it as a reason to actually let them get in the way of the MC's survival. adding rewards to make them more appealing only demeans these stories.

Silent Hill 3
Downpour
Heather
Alessa

I'd bring it all back to Alessa, maybe a bridge game between SH1 and SH3. Make it absolutely nothing like Downpour. I can recognize that Homecoming at least tried and it did have a good design or two for the bosses. Downpour was just a fucking mess, random ass enemies like hobos and ghost police cars, the pyramid head ripoff that's not pyramid head (just put him in at that point, shit), the stupid ass fucking black hole chase sequences (the water otherworld was neat, and was far less prevalent sadly), and then the final boss...just...jesus christ Downpour was fucking so fucking awful, I didn't think it'd get worse after Homecoming, which at least tried and failed horribly.

Fuck man, I want more Alessa and the Gods, none of this "muh guilty" bullshit that SH2 spawned, should have just stayed to SH2 and that was it.
>>
>>319933595
But Alessa is gone.
>>
>>319933416
Yeah the "side missions" in SM were little audio snippets you'd get on your phone. You could then look around for more clues to what is going on in that snippet, there were clues in the environment that would trigger more audio snippets. So in the end you'd have one complete story of other people in Silent Hill.
The phone itself was really neatly implemented imo.
>>
>>319933753
After Silent Hill 3, sure. But what about all the stuff in between SH Origins and SH1? What about all the stuff in between SH1 and SH3? You could definitely expand on events in between either of those. It'd be a little harder solely because her other half isn't there, but it could be done.

I can't decide. All the bad ones are bad. Downpour, Homecoming, Origins, Book of Memories. Shattered Memories gets a pass, but not really a Silent Hill game because it kinda gave up on the supernatural (and the gore) and just went full psychological.

I would maybe make a game that takes place in 1800s Silent Hill - back to the roots of The Order as how they start worshipping otherworld delusions thinking they are The God and angels they worship.
That or a game about Brahms, with Cybil as a commisioner and some other younger lady cop as her partner.

Pretty sure it'd be hard to get your hands on whatever records weren't destroyed on the town without getting hurt by Alessa unless you're an innocent kid. But whatever.

And so did Silent Hill 2, and look at what Silent Hill 2 caused. I love SH2, but it's the sole reason for the series downfall because everything tries to emulate it.

The same would be true if everything tried to emulate SH4. So far when things have focused on Alessa, Harry, Heather, whatever. Things have been SH and not complete jokes like Homecoming and Downpour were. Origins was bad, but solely because of the jumping back and forth with the mirrors and breakable weapons. Shattered Memories was actually a good spin. They both felt SH without completely ripping something off and doing it far far far worse.
>>
>>319934506
But Alessa was defeated.
>>
>>319934707
Was she? I'm not sure the baby on the original game made that clear. When does SH2 happen? Pretty sure she's alive on that one.
>>
>>319934027
Forget that the Origins even exists. It's a total lore rape, without any logic either.

the post-SH1 events are well enough told in 3; Harry's on the run from cultists, even shoots one dead as self defense. Nothing special besides that happens.
>>
>>319934703
Sorry, that I don't want the series to recycle everything.
>>
>>319934702
i dunno man, Ito's stuff seems very eerie as long as you're thinking about it as a general idea, but while reading the COMICS it just comes out as him trying to be as gross and whacky as possible, which is more funny that scary

>>319934918
They could adapt that Past Life comic.
>>
>>319931612
First - wrong, he is in like 5-6 or something
Second - there are notes and a tape with him which gives you the backstory that he is clearly more interested in money and materialism than ushering a new paradise. He is also a very big part of the story since he is the one that actually leads Heather to both Leonard and Claudia.

More like the God was defeated, twice at this point. Not sure what else could potentially give rise to another demon presence like the cult deity, unless a new developer gets creative with the cult's lore.

>>319934840

She reincarnates Harry's babby who later becomes Heather. Alessa is 'dead' in a physical sense, but she does live on through Heather.
>>
>>319934918
Past Life Comic.
>>319934932
It's already doing that with SH2. It's just a spooky town with muh guilt instead of Gods and Native Americans and other shit.
>>
>>319934840
Well, Heather is as much Alessa as Cheryl was. Even more so actually, seeing how her figure faded out at the end of 1.

SH2 seems to take place fairly soon after 1, still during 1980s. SH3 happens in late 90s or very early 00s.

Now that I think about it, this trailer really has this "Ito-style" to it.

To be more specific, I'm talking about this part. I'm really sure whatever plot analysis I read it mentioned this room was like this because James was getting closer to Alessa.
>>
>>319934968
but gross stuff are scary. Also, there are so many comics he has done, it is dumb to generalize - some are bad, others are good. I don't think it is just him trying to be as whacky and gross that is the most frightening about his tales though. Often there are some sense of that people are just living their ordinairy lives and then suddenly the ordinairy lifestyle becomes the scary part - like your fiancee being a creepy-ass head-larva, your neighbour is some creepy monster-lady and noone believes you, the super-famous model is actually a monster but everyone accepts it because she is a superfamous model right!?
>>
>>319935258
You clearly don't understand how the town works. Or you wanna pretend that 2 has nothing to do with the rest of the series, which is even sadder.
>>
as someone who is unfamiliar with the silent hill series how would you explain it to me?
>>
>>319935505
isn't the hotel filled with water because that's what it actually looks like? There was a huge fire and then it got flooded? In the prison you see a building burning - I think it's because someone burned the hotel down.

The game came out in 2003.
Assuming that the SH1 happened around 1983, and that Heather is 17, it would set sh3 to year 2000

>>319935505
Nah, I don't think that any of the James' experiences had anything to do with Alessa. He'd just r
learned the truth, and the false world was now breaking apart.

>>
>>319936005
The Silent Hill psychological effects only happen because of Alessa, Samael and Metatron's influences.

>>319935789
I really don't remember very well.
>>
>>319936397
Nope. The town's area had had this weird "power" long before the settlers came to the area, and it had affected people for centuries. Maybe in lesser strength than after the Alessa incident, but still.

the series also shows that you can harness and borrow this power, even take it outside the town's borders.

and yeah, the hotel had infact been ruined by a fire ages before James arrived there in the game.
>>
>>319937085
Yeah, I meant it in a way that Alessa was kind of the Gods' vessel.
>>
Everything about SH4 is disappointing thus far. I've just stopped playing it at this point because I can only deal with so much. I can't imagine completing a whole game while feeling this way, and it's a shame because I love all the other 3. I just feel so compelled to play 4. Fuck, man.

Shame. 4 isn't my favorite, but I did enjoy it nevertheless. It is also far higher quality game and SH title than any of the western sequels.
>>
>>319937634
Not him, but SH4 is a bit polarizing title. Its game play was totally overhauled and more experimental, so it isn't the smoothest ride always.

I did dig the game's atmosphere, story and soundtrack a lot.

>Homecoming, if you don't count that, 4

>Henry, although he's still cool

To fix Silent Hill, retcon homecoming, retcon "The Order", which I believe was a mistranslation that was expanded upon in the non canon movies. Emphasize that "The Order" is actually just "That weird cult", and far more disorganized, as seen in Silent Hill 3 and 4, leaving WAY more of the story and setting open to explore.

If I were to make a new game, it'd be about a former Silent Hill cultist who's drawn back to the town to stop people from trying to create a new Alessa. More expanding upon what the dumbass cult members did precisely, more expanding upon the lore of 3 and 4. I'd try to steer clear of 1 and 2, as 1 is already continued upon in 3, and 2 is a standalone adventure (Although I'd made sure that Pyramid Head was canon a part of James' mind and his alone)

By letting it stay dead
There's only so much you can do with the same setting/mechanics/story without everything getting stale or ridiculous. Besides, the story pretty much came full circle with 3, there was nothing left to add IMO
The Room tried something new but it mostly failed IMO (too bright, too much backtracking, escort mission), and everything after that didn't really interest me

Just invent new gimmicks (sightjacking, camera from FF, insanity meter etc.) and start a new IP
