I've played one MMO ever, and that was Guild wars 2. And I've never become addicted to it even though I have gotten far in it. If I play WOW like just a normal game then I think it can't do any harm.

If you've never played before yeah, it's worth it. Just realize that your experience will be a watered down experience of what it originally would have been. I suggest holding on the that box until the new xpack if you plan on playing then. The game is a shadow of its former self, and you'll miss out on the best parts of the game.
For now, the best new player experience you are going to get is to go download the Nostalrius server for WoW. Just google it. It's pretty damn accurate to how retail WoW was, you just don't get the xpacks yet.

People just don't play it anymore. The people that do play have been doing so for a very long time--you'll be amongst an extreme minority of fresh players. The old zones are barren wastelands with nobody doing anything together, there is no sense of community, only speed running through everything as fast as possible, and if you can't keep up, you'll be kicked from groups. The best parts of the game can only be experienced during the highlight of that particular xpack, and WoD is the current...and it's garbage that promotes solo playing.
Why should you wait? Because for the first couple months there is a huge surge of players and you'll group a lot and get the best overall experience. If the xpack sucks then many people will drop it but you still get to experience some sort of community (though not at good as 2004-2009).
That's the thing with Nostalrius. There are veteran and new players galore and the community is thriving.

Ultima Online and Lineage were some of my favorites and what got me in to PC gaming to begin with. Vanilla WoW was also good, but different. I wish WoW didn't transform the genre turning every MMO to come out after it into a clone, but the fact that it did isn't really WoW's fault.
It's fun for a one time playthrough. It's definitely worth the money, it just gets a bit stale at endgame. If you get lucky enough to get into a consistent raiding guild, however, you will be able to experience the only content Blizzard has gotten better at.

Not that guy, but in my opinion it's more like a multiplayer rpg now rather than an mmorpg. Instead of going out in the world to do stuff you wait around in queues to teleport to dungeons and pvp matces. When you do go out into the world you'll find it mostly empty, and the quests and monsters are extremely easy and dissatifing.

Release of Cata was great. It felt expansive and terrifying, the 5 mans were brutal and took actual thought and copious amounts of time to do, and the PvPsucked.It didn't start to get bad until the second tier of content was delayed.
