Pretty great considering how much more time games take to make compared to the era of the DS and smartphones cannibalizing everything. Everything I've gotten for it is so engrossing everything else gets put on hold until I've exhausted everything the game has to offer, even for franchises that never really grabbed me in previous entries like Fire Emblem or SMT.

The first half of its life was extremely shitty, but a few decent games finally came out in 2014/2015. Since I have the limited edition of ZTD on my vita, the only thing I'll be doing on 3ds in 2016 is trying to pick up atlus games on sale.
3DS library is pretty lame and mostly made of half assed DS sequel and tons of shit by Nintendo/Atlus/Level 5 that just kinda feels it's there
if it wasn't for MH4 i would have never picked one to be honest

Zones are shit but everything else is bigger and smoother I just can't imagine preferring 3. Mounting is QTE sure, but it adds variety to the hunts while rewarding players taking advantage of the enviroment.

Well the novelty runs out very fast when hunts on certain maps end up being one guy agroing the monster while the three others continuously climb up a mountain and jump off of it until the monster allows you to stunlock it's shit. The best hunts in 4U are the ones with a flat playing field.

I agree, 2015 is an awful year for the 3DS when it just followed a good 2014. 2013 is still its best year.
At least in 2016 I have SMT IV Final to look forward to.
3DS was just ok this year. Maybe the worst since 2011, there wasn't a ton of stuff I wanted to play. Majora's and Xenoblade are great but they're remakes/ports and Chibi Robo was a good time. I can't even remember what else I played on it this year.
Next year is already looking insanely better. Paper Jam, Zero Escape 3, Ace Attorney 6, Pokemon Z (no way it's not happening), maybe I'll pick up FE:if, Metroid FF will probably be a good game since NLG is making it, plus whatever else gets announced. It's already looking like the best year for the system since 2013

Explorers plays pretty much the same as Rescue Team but it's got Gen IV mons and a game full of new dungeons. Core gameplay hasn't changed very much. There's three versions but you only need Sky, that's got the most content including some really cool special episodes.
If you want something familiar, go for that.
Super has substantial changes to core gameplay and is also quite great. Probably the most content rich, includes all 720 mons, and a bunch of fan service for fans of the series. However the story is really restrictive in the start.
If you must only play one, play that.
Stay away from Gates.

Just be prepared for a slow start.
PMD has had a surprisingly good story for Pokemon, and explorers/super haven't changed that.
However Explorers got really wordy and repetitive and Super's just gotten worse.
So have the stamina to power few a boring few hours at the start.

I don't agree that Super is more content rich than sky at all.
But, I would definitely say that the gameplay improvements make it the one with the best gameplay.
I'd recommend going back and playing Sky when you're done with it, it has a great story. Or maybe playing Sky first so the inferior gameplay doesn't get you down.
